this was a very impressively written novel by a very obviously talented author. it read like a pretentious classic and had a grainy film-like texture to it. the aesthetic of reading this book was almost better than reading the book itself if that makes any sense

DNF. I don’t get the hype. Couldn’t get into it. Dialogue and characters are just… meh. Feels incredibly predictable.

Kinda Great Gatsby-esque but with a bunch of kids in college.

Personally I really enjoyed Part I of the book, it was a non-stop page turner for me, however everything falls apart for me as a reader in Part II of the book, I understand that the author was trying to evidently show the different reactions to guilt (of murdering someone) and how it may vary and influence the psyche differently per individual, however it really really dragged on for me when I already understood the point and also it progressively got weirder especially when it was confirmed the twins were and have already slept together !? that was it i wanted to clock out but i finished the book nonetheless because of the high praises for this book and I will understand why people say its their favourite the first half entranced me into the dark academia world while the second half of the book reminded me that it was dark academia emphasis on the dark.

How was I so invested in a story in which all the characters were despicable and I hate them all?

What a wild rambling ride.

“…she really was older, not the glancing-eyed girl I had fallen in love with but no less beautiful for that; beautiful now in a way that a less excited my senses than tore at my very heart”

“Mais, vrai, J'ai trop pleure! Les aubes sont navrantes.”

“…and my life which I had thought was lost, stretched out indescribably precious and sweet before me.”

“Some things are too terrible to grasp at once. Other things - naked, sputtering, indelible in their horror - are too terrible to really grasp ever at all. It is only later, in solitude, in memory that the realisation dawns: when the ashes are cold; when the mourners have departed; when one looks around and finds oneself - quite to one's surprise - in an entirely different world.”
