I will read anything Zadie writes and I have at this point. I was excited when I heard about this new collection of essays but also a little skeptical since they were produced so quickly. I did enjoy these but they're not my favorite things she's written.
"The American Exception" and "Contempt as a Virus" are the real standouts here but I did like her insights into Covid life in "Suffering Like Mel Gibson." The Screengrabs seemed a little like filler but were still entertaining to read because she's so skilled at character sketches. Unlike her more recent writings, this at times felt a little too elevated in its style and almost like she was trying too hard...but at the end of the day, she still knows how to cut through to the heart of the matter when it comes to truly seeing and understanding humanity.
