This is a well-written and engaging look at the history and development of SUPERMAN over the 75 years since his development. It covers Superman in all of his media embodiments: comics, movies, stage plays, newspaper strips, tv, etc. etc. The longest and, to me, most interesting section is the initial section that covers his initial creation and development. The remainder of the book does a good job of covering his other incarnations, but mostly on a cursory level. (After all, there's over 75 years of development to cover!)
This is a great introduction to Superman and all the changes he's been through. It's written in a very friendly way, and is accessible to people who aren't familiar with Superman and his mythos. Ultimately, there's not a lot of new material here for a long-time fan like me, but there are some interesting tidbit scattered throughout. It's nice to have all of this information together under one cover, and not scattered around in various magazines and websites.

It's a shame that a biography about one of the most potentially interesting subjects ever feels so dry. Tye's "Superman: a Biography" talks a lot about the Man of Steel's enduring qualities but never manages to convey the sense of breathless wonder about him that so many of the subjects had. On the other hand, the story also keeps a dry and academic tone to the mishaps of the so-called "Superman curse" and the legal battles of his creators, sparing it from sounding too sordid but also anesthetizing the complications behind the scenes.
If people want an exhaustive timeline of Superman events (and mostly it's a long list of the merchandise made) then this is a good book to read. However, this isn't one to give someone who hasn't heard of Superman if you want to inspire their curiosity. And it's not engaging enough to compete with the other offerings for the die-hard fans who probably already know 90% of what's found inside. Best given to those who want a compilation or just like collecting Superman stuff.
Personally, I found the book engaging enough. The best parts were talking about the Donner films. Which came closest to explaining the excitement people have about the big blue boy scout...

বইটা তথ্যবহুল ও ভাল,তবে আরো ভাল আশা করছিলাম। দোষ লেখকের না।আশা করসিলাম সুপারম্যানের ফিলোসফি আর কালচারাল ইম্প্যাক্ট নিয়ে আলোচনা হবে ।আর বইটা সেটাই বলসে যেটা বইয়ের নামেই আছে।কমিক হিসাবে যাত্রা শুরু করা রেডিও,টিভি আর মুভিতে এক-ই ভাবে সাবলীল সুপারম্যান ফ্রেঞ্চাইজির ইতিহাস নিয়েই এই বই।পপ কালচার আইকন হিসাবে এত্ত দিন টিকে থাকার পেছনে কমিক্সের ভুমিকা থাকলেও সুপারম্যান রেডিও,টিভি আর মুভির ইম্প্যাক্ট যে বিশাল এটা এই বই না পড়লে জীবনেও বুঝতাম না।(যেমন সুপারম্যান প্রথম উড়েছিল কিন্ত রেডিওতে,কমিকে না)
ক্রিয়েটর,পাবলিশার,সুপারম্যানের ইতিহাসে কমিক এডিটরদের ভুমিকা,সুপারম্যানের রিলিজিয়াস ইন্টারপ্রিটেশন এই জিনিসগুলা ভাল লাগসে,বেশি ভাল লাগছে ক্রিস্টোফার রীভসের সুপারম্যান দ্য মুভি বানানোর কাহিনী। মেইনস্ট্রীম একটা মুভি বানানো যে এত্ত ঝামেলার এটা বোধহয় কেউ-ই বুঝে না।তবে এটা থেকে যেটা বুঝছি সুপারহিরো মুভি বানাতে পরিচালকের প্রথমে ওই ক্যারেকটারের এসেন্স কি এটা বুঝা লাগে,তারপর অন্য কিছু(জ্যাক স্নাইডার সুপারম্যানের এসেন্স কি এটা বুঝতেই পারেনাই,এ গ্রেইট ট্রাজেডী)।

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Larry Tye's book covers the complete history of Superman, starting in the earliest days with Siegel and Shuster, and going all the way up to last year's New 52 reboot. It's good that it doesn't attempt to cover just the early days, because that material is well covered by Gerard Jones' [b:Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book|105398|Men of Tomorrow Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book|Gerard Jones|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348555871s/105398.jpg|101610]. Instead we get lots of great anecdotes about the radio, television and film versions of Superman, plus of course, all the various comic book incarnations. It doesn't skip over any major event in Superman's history, not even easily forgotten epochs like when Curt Swan retired (in the process creating the greatest single Superman comic of all-time, with writer Alan Moore), the Superboy TV series or Shaquille O'Neil's ill-fated Steel movie.
Ultimately this serves as an excellent biography of Superman across every conceivable medium. Some of the anecdotes are presented as fact, when there is questionable evidence, which irked me a little bit, but in general, this is a well-researched book.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a decent history of the character.

A good history of the Man of Steel and a behind the scenes look at the origins of all the Superman media products over the years. One drawback was the author tended to jump around in time during chapters. Overall it was a very good read.

A well-written, comprehensive history of the people behind Superman. It doesn't go too much into the history of each individual incarnation, but the people that worked to create these renditions. I'd love a second edition that looks deeper into the current era.
It's pretty fair across mediums as well. Spending equal time discussing TV, comics and movies. Well done.

It was an interesting book, with a lot of focus on Superman's early years. But it covered right up until the modern day and was very interesting.

Boring. Okay so I'm not a big superman fan - but I am a comics fan. And I remember watching the George Reeves Superman in black and white. And watching and enjoying Superman I and II (I may have never seen the others). I watched Lois and Clark - and all but season 2 and 3 or so of ten seasons of Smallville. But I always thought that Superman was an uninteresting character - Clark though was somewhat interesting. But this book did not cover much new ground. Except for the coverage of the initial creators and business people who were not portrayed particularly as people you'd want to know more of. Don't bother reading.
