This series is reading more and more like ghostwritten fan fiction.

A good read, but how long is the series going to be. I like Mags, but this is the 4th book in the series and apparently not the last. How much longer can this story be? It's not that the book isn't good, but it just seems like it could be combined with another to finish the series more quickly. There are still many questions left unanswered.

The book has a slow start, and I was just begining to think it was going to be slow again the whole time like in books 1 and 2, but oh wow did it pick up. I struggled to put it down. Very strong climax and ending. Great character depth development and more world building. You get a peak outside of Valdemar.

It was alright but there is a very abrupt transition in the middle of the book that I don't know if it is the best flowing most coherent story that Mercedes has written.

Finally some action in this series!  It comes pretty much out of nowhere in the middle of the book (you could skip the first half with no real loss) but from then on it's adventure rather than family/school problems.

Kidnapped from the Collegium. Mags finds himself on his own and in deep trouble. Great reading.

This was... such a disappointment. The first two-thirds of the book is filler, with painfully detailed depictions of things that will never be mentioned again and/or have absolutely no relevance beyond "look how amazing-most our hero is!" The last third should have been the entire book, and is the only time there is some semblance of a story.

I grew up reading Lackey's books, wanting to be a herald, loving what they stood for, and of course, magical horse best friends. I know what I'm getting into when I read her work. Foundation started out with an interesting premise - the beginning of the Collegia. This series has since turned from a trilogy into an extended "Gary Stu and his Exposition Circus" disappointment. The main character is actively awful - his "flaws" effectively don't exist at all, as he is just so amazing that he overcomes them. Everything is explained in excruciating detail by characters to the reader, just in case you didn't get the clue-by-four.

There's no longer a reason to read her books, not even as brain candy. I'm so immensely disappointed and saddened.

Oh I really liked this book. Except for the part in the middle where one minute Mags is talking with a Healer and Nikolas and the next minute he's hallucinating for like, 10 pages. It felt like Lackey didn't know how to transition from where she was in the story to where she was going, so she pulled a fast one. Or tried to. It made me all scowly.

However, I really, really love Reaylis the Suncat, so I forgive her. But I'm still scowly.

Re-read May 2017. I am in love with that ridiculous Suncat. I need more of him in my life.
