Around the World in Eighty Days was such a fun read. The descriptions of places are a little lengthy at times, but overall the story moved along at a decent pace. It follows a fairly predictable arc; travelling from place to place, hitting all manner of amusing obstacles. I love Fogg's stoic reactions to every obstacle they come across, in contrast to Passepartout's panic and worry. Fix's misguided intentions and failing attempts to interfere also add another level of comedy. Despite how well known this story is, I didn't actually know how it ended and the little twist at the end did take me pleasantly by surprise. One thing to note is that this was written in the 1800s, and at times, particularly when describing other nationalities, that is quite obvious!
It was just OK. The end really killed it for me, not wanting to give anything away, the ending depends on a very uncharacteristic move by the main character.
Good old classic - can't believe I've never read it before!
I finished two books today! Yay! But Verne is also great and I'm happy to have read something by him in its original form, at last. I "read" this as an audiobook, and the narrator was thoroughly enjoyable. The characters were great, and I now ship Aouda and Fogg immensely. She was always a pleasant character to hear back from again.
But oh my gosh, Verne is a master. Even though I had read the abridged version of this before, I still felt a deep pain for Fogg when he had "failed". I look forward to reading more by him.
