I read this series years ago and found it got really slow through the middle. After hearing they were making it into a TV series I decided to pick them up again. I am very glad I did! I don't remember anything from my first read through so it's like living through this saga for the first time. I am thoroughly enjoying every bit of it so far. This last book I must admit was slower than the others and from what I do remember this is the start of the slow part of the series. I am hoping I can stay as interested as I am now.
There isn't much I don't like about the series but the main thing I don't sticks out in each book. What I have the most trouble with is the female characters and I blame that on Robert Jordan. In the books he has just about all of the men comment at one point or another that they don't understand women. I think that is definitely Jordan's inner voice admitting he does not know or understand anything about women. With that idea in my head, I can get through most of the uncomfortable encounters. The biggest complaint I have though is the character, Elayne Trakand. I pretty much hate her! I don’t understand what Rand sees in her or why Matt doesn’t just tell her, look, I hate you…I am only here because my friend asked me to get you. If it wasn’t for that, I would leave you here and let you fend for yourself! Hopefully she redeems herself somewhere down the line, but for now, she is literally the worst. She did apologize after he saved her life yet again, but damn, she treats him like dirt most of the time. Off my soap box!
Started book 8 today and hopefully things start finally falling into place!

Considering this is the first book of the Wheel of Time "slog," it's a pleasant surprise. Not among my favorites; I was expecting this one to drag. The progress of the Wheel slows markedly. If you're a fan of how Robert Jordan rewarded patient readers, there are some twists here as spicy as Martin's ASOIAF. To say more would spoil a few surprises. The final chapters match the expectations of the previous books. This is the Everest of fantasy epics for a reason. Enjoy a hot drink, pace yourself, and keep going!

This was the culmination of many stories threads. Rand overcoming the last of the Sammael conspiracy and finishing his conquering of the eastern kingdoms was immensely satisfying.
But the story really belongs to the Ebou Dar plot. This was Nynaeve and Elayne's great moments, and seeing Mat finally coming to peace, or at least a partnership with them was immensely satisfying.
