Mooi verhaal over koloniaal India (en de slavenarbeiders die naar Mauritius werden verscheept). Enige wat me vaak uit het verhaal haalde waren de verschillende dialecten (inclusief schippers-Engels).

I don't even know how I feel about this book. It wasn't anything special, but good enough for me to read the whole thing. It felt like the whole book was moving at too much of a slow pace. The author used a lot of Indian (?) phrases that left me slightly confused. IT ENDED ON A CLIFFHANGER. Ugh. Well written though.

The novel is filled with entertaining characters and the colors, smells, and languages of India. It is beautifully written and crammed full of unusual words–Bengali words, sailor and lascar jargon, ornate oriental English, and various patois. The book has a glossary, but it is ironically intended. Comic, cruel, vivid, and deeply engrossing, the novel is rich and teeming with life.
