I know everyone loves this book but somehow the fact the the boy just keeps taking kind of bothers me. The relationship is so one sided. It seems unhealthy.
I really enjoy this book, it is so cute and has a great meaning behind it too. It shows that no matter how long two people (or in this case boy and tree) that love each other are apart, they will always find their way back to each other. Shel Silverstein really has a way of words and this story was great.
This is a story about an emotionally abusive one-sided relationship. Ok… maybe I’m being a little dramatic of my description of this children’s book but it was pretty bad. All the tree does is give and all the boy does is take. It was sad to read.

I know, I know...its a classic, yadda yadda. However, its just too darn depressing for me to like it.

Reading children books as an adult hits different because now I understand both prespectives. I understand why the tree ties its selfworth to the boys happiness. In Angelica's words "i love my sister more than anything in this life. I will choose her happiness over mine anytime'....I also understand the boy and his safety net tendencies.I understand him returning to his safe place, to the place he feels familiar with. Tbh, I dont think he realises how selfish he is being. To him, this is that safe place he goes back to because everything gets solved...He feels like the personification of 'this is me trying' by Taylor swift
Most of all, I understand how masochistic this codependency is and why both parties have tapped into it. They are all they have so of course they feel deeply for each other.
But then again, both parties were happy each time they met. So who are we,the outsiders, to tell them how 'unhealthy their relationship was. We aren't in it and again...They were Happy!
