5 out of 10.

Standard fantasy adventure story with a dash of romance. Nice illustrations, though.

This was a nice, quick read. There have been other books done a lot more detailed, with character and world build more developed, but this still worked. I really liked Emeline and her little brother, not to forget her father and one special other character. And, even though it was not a longer read, it was a story that I very much enjoyed and became invested in.

The creepy, supernatural, being in the forest really spooked the heck out of me. It was enough hints and descriptions to get my imagination going. Then there was the talks of how it smelled, what it could do, how one of them showed up when least expected. I kept reading just to find out where they came from, why they existed, and what was to become of their village.

I wish there was a little more information though, about Emeline's family and their history with magic. More about all of their origins and about their town. But, maybe, there will be another one soon that will have all of that and an even bigger adventure. Now, that we've gotten to know more about the characters', hopefully it will have all of that and more.

A really sweet book about a determined village girl who would do anything to protect her family and her village after sitting a Dark Creature. Going as far to travel all the way to the king, risking herself and the discovery of her new magic to gain the King’s protection.
The wrote was smooth and flowy. The characters were amazing, my favorite being Fish and Reese. And the illustrations were to die for even if some weren’t finished in the ARC I had.

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Review can be found on *Milky Way of Books*

A beautiful story about love family and nature. The illustrations will be fantastic in print since I got this as an e-ARC and Emeline's power of love is a delight to read. While this borders, to me, the line between YA and MG, it is recommended for its lush descriptions and wonderful storytelling.

This went in a completely different direction than I had thought. Less fantasy and more a magic and steampunk mix. Instead of entering a magical world to save her brother, she essentially saves her kingdom. I liked that not everything tied up neatly at the end. The illustrations were beautiful, and the story was well written. I appreciated the moments of humor and the strong, young female protagonist. Definitely easily applied to current American situations.

Good book.

This is the cutest and most relaxing fantasy I've read in a long time. It's not intense, or very fast-paced, but I loved the characters and the magic/science debate. The story is decent and it's got a slow burn romance that I completely fell for. And a great dad-daughter-brother relationship. Bonus, it has gorgeous illustrations! It was just so relaxing for me. One problem I had with the novel was the world building and extent of the sciences. There is also no map. :/

If you're in a reading slump and need a mental break, this book will help!
