I began this book with very low expectations because I didn't want to be disappointed. The beginning had me confused because of the foreign terms but I quickly adapted and was sucked into a fantasy world of darkness and power.
I was enthralled. Adelina wasn't a fragile princess, she was a warrior. She was dark and full of mystery. At times I found myself urging her to release her inner demons.
The fantasy world they lived in beckoned to me, and I eagerly absorbed all the details and information presented about Kenettra.
As for the male characters, I was drawn to Teren instead of Enzo. Enzo was just so safe and predictable. He was tough because he had to take back his place as crown prince, he went soft when Adelina arrived because she reminded him of his former love. Psh. I want Teren! He has a goodness within him just waiting to be unleashed -- the polar opposite of Adelina whose darkness demands to be known.
I was thrilled the entire time I read this book. I didn't know what to expect. I eagerly await the next instalment and highly recommend this book to everyone.

I went into this with high hopes, because I've read other Marie Lu books & loved them, but this one just didn't wow me.
But the thing is, Adelina cannot access her powers. She doesn't know why, but nothing happens, even when tested by her Father in terrible situations.
Then one night, as Adelina tries to run away from her father's arranged marriage, her powers overwhelm her and she kills her father. She then runs into some other Young Elites who try to help her hone her powers to be more useful and less volatile.
As time passes, Adelina cannot control her desire to do bad things with her power - the fury and fear is to heady a feeling.
This causes many problems for Adelina, who is eventually banished from the Daggers, the very Young Elites who took her in and tried to train her.
Woven in between Adelina's battles with herself, are the battles she must face with the other Elites, against Teren and the Inquisitors - those who are trying to eliminate the malfetto from the general population.
Overall, the story did grow. I found the story to be quite confusing at times, but it did unravel itself enough to make sense.
I found the main character, Adelina, to be quite unlikeable, mainly because she seemed to be an antagonist, fighting other antagonists - there didn't really seem to be a good presence in the book at all.
Perhaps the next book in the series would bring more of Adelina's story to light, and I might learn to like her more, but this book just didn't do it for me.
Spoiler
A virus swept the land. Those who survived were left with strange markings and even stranger powers. Adelina is one such Young Elite (as they are called). But she is also labelled a malfetto, a scourge on society, because of her strange powers. But the thing is, Adelina cannot access her powers. She doesn't know why, but nothing happens, even when tested by her Father in terrible situations.

I had this book in my shelf forever and when I finally read it I hated myself for waiting so long to read it, with this Marie Lu became one of my favorite writers, I HATED that one character died cause I loved him and wanted him to be with Adelina.
This whole book hurt my heart. I don't know if I'll read the next one...
