“I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside. It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.”

Adelina is angry and bitter. She has darkness within her; a darkness that emanated from childhood experiences of being abused, stigmatized and cast away. She's definitely not a Mary Sue and none of The Young Elites are. They fight for equality and murder for them is a means for and end.

Love Story: Yes, there is but this story is not centred on it. It's not the kind of love either that brings the best out of someone.

Really good read, much better than I anticipated. Plus it got me out of a reading slump. Not many books can do that without adding fuel to the fire. Thus why I gave it 4 rather than 3.5

In a world where a fever killed thousands and left many physically marked a decade ago, there are a few that rise above the scorn and discrimination that they face from the public. They’re rumored to possess strange powers and have been aptly named the Young Elites. The corrupt government (always the corrupt government) is killing off Young Elites left, right and center, and our leading lady isn’t going to be treated any differently.

Adelina’s father is power hungry. He believes that malfettos show their strengths when in pain and after Adelina was left marked from the fever, he tormented her every day of her life. He eventually gives up and agrees to marry Adelina off to an old businessman and this is what finally sends Adelina over the edge of no return.

The Dagger Society is a secret group of Young Elites who seek out those who possess unworldly power before the Inquisition can kill them off. Their leader has a very specific vendetta against the government and ultimately they plan to overthrow it with the help of other Young Elites. But they’ve never seen someone with Adelina’s capabilities and each member of the Dagger Society has a different opinion of her and her powers, and whether or not she should be allowed to join them or even be spared her life.

Let me preface this before I begin--I chose this book PURELY because of the awful tropes the summary presents, and decided it would suffer the fate of many other YA novels that come across our (being me and my roommates) critical gaze.
There were a couple of surprises that I really liked about this book, those being Rafaelle,
SpoilerEnzo's murder
, and
SpoilerVioletta's powers
. Otherwise, however, it suffered from a litany of terrible young adult tropes, mainly the Mary Sue protagonist and the obvious love triangle set up. While the love triangle may not have fallen into place as stereotypically as any ol' generic YA novel, it was there nonetheless and it was a stupid plot device. I also regretted the absence of character development in any of the characters. They stayed the exact same, maybe with a few character changes but not enough for the length of time that the novel presents. Also, I really liked some of the side characters (GEMMA) and they never passed a surface layer of character.

So straight out the gate, I felt a bit weird reading this cause I was still very hung up on the last book I read, so at some point this will probably need a reread. I liked the setting and I mostly liked the characters, but honestly I felt the same thing as when I read the Archived last year, is that you are putting a shit ton of pressure on a traumatised 16 year old, who not only was abused her entire life, but who you literally rescued from her execution (which you proceeded to exploit and retraumatise her to just to get the results you wanted), and you didn't give her any room to open up to you or relax around you because of the whole "if you do anying bad we kill you", meaning she is painted into a corner because you will not let her do anything other than betray you because you don't trust her to do anything except betray you. And then when she is injured and in a life and death situation you blame *her* for a mistake, a 16year old, who is explicitly younger than all of you, who you all know has spent time imprisoned and literally tied to her execution post, who you try to kill befoer even asking for a proper explanation - but no you won't save anyone who isn't explicitly useful to you and if they're not then let them die, or hell even do it yourselves, when they're too young and hurt to really understand - all because you want to be on the throne. Oh yes you claim high and mighty motives like trying to save the malfettos, but you don't. Only the ones that are elites, that are useful to your goal of getting on the throne. Honestly, I ahve no sympathy for Enzo at all, and even raffaele, as nice as he is, his last scene, where he throws ehr under the bus because a 16 year old traumatised abused girl can never be redeemed and therefore shouldn't even be given the chance to. I liked the setting and the writing was good, and god I felt sympathy for Adelina and Violetta, but everyone else? I have no time for you. Like the book says, Kindness only ever with strings is still using and manipulating a person.

A refreshingly dark story full of an elite group of teens with intriguing powers, corrupt royals, and movie quality action. Lu has a gift for writing action scenes that made this world come to life in my mind like very few stories have done before.

I know someone somewhere has pointed it out before, but can I just go ahead and say it again? Adelina = Darth Vader. I mean c'mon. It's amazing to me, as I'm a total Vader sympathizer. It probably wasn't intentional, and I haven't done any research on the book to find out. I just saw the parallels there, and think that they're cool. Intentional or not.
Can't wait to see where this series goes!
