man oh man why did i ever give up on this series it is truly thrilling we fr need more books about people succumbing to the darkness and ofc marie lu creates a gorgeous and entrancing world for it to take place in with a brilliant cast of characters but none that are quite so compelling as adelina im obsessed with her twisted mind

At first I wasn't sure if liked this book or not. However, I think this book just made me uncomfortable to read because I've never read one from the perspective of the villain. I think reading about the descent into darkness is fascinating and Marie Lu did an excellent job of bringing to life this poor girl who wants to be good, but can't overcome the darkness inside of her. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who needs something different to read. The concept is super interesting and gives the reader sympathy for the bad guy. It also raises the question, are humans born, or created evil?

This is the first time I write something here. I felt like I had to explain myself for the DNF... and the one star too.
How can something be so boring and frustrating at the same time? I LOVE dark heroines, but this MC is just weird, stupid, selfish, stupid.. and did I mention effin stupid??! There are no clear explanations in this book. The shady and secret things are not even shady and not even being a secret. The progress is weird. The characters are lacking a few important brain parts... This was just disappointing.
In 99% cases I finish the books I find not likeable but I just can't with this book. I HAD TO READ TWO OTHER BOOKS JUST TO TRY TO CONTINUE THIS ONE. Clearly didn't help.
Maybe I'm just late to the party?

3.5... Maybe

This books was miles and miles better than Legend (which is a book I thoroughly enjoyed), and a perfect set-up to this new series. I can't wait to read the next book!

At first I didn't think I would like the story. However, as I got further into the book I got into the story more and more. I am excited for another!

Good book overall. Great concept and interesting world building. The writing was good, descriptive, and easy to follow, but lacked a bit of punch. My final rating chalks down to book chemistry. I didn't feel as invested in the characters as I have been with other books. Though I have to admit, after being pretty damn disappointed by the turn of events in [b:Queen of Shadows|18006496|Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)|Sarah J. Maas|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1441230104s/18006496.jpg|25272067] I really needed something spectacular to make me forget, and this didn't quite do it. So I mean it when I say Young Elites, it's not you, it's me.

“Sorry, always sorry. What in the world can you buy with an apology?”

This book used to be quite popular in my early years as a bookworm, so I was aware that this specific book was 'one of a kind', since Adelina, the main character, was known to be a villain, or someone that grew to avoid being some sort of hero. Marie Lu's writing isn't new to me either, since I read Legend years, years ago.

Maybe because of that, I was waiting for darker, further feel into Adelina's descend to her power and role as a possible antagonist. Her character was built, fleshed out well, and her relationship with Violetta intrigued me. I kept expecting more and more hate, more madness, but probably because this is a first book, Lu only built all the basis for chaos.

The men were all incredibly boring. Enzo, whom I enjoyed for a while because... hello? blood red hair? how cool is that?, ended up becoming as bland as a door. Teren was a different type of one dimensional:I can name a grand total of 2 personality traits that he had. It's funny, I realize now, a big chunk of their passions or stories/pasts revolved around women, either with love or obsession. It happens that none of the women were Adelina.

Did I want it to be her? Not exactly. It's just that the relationships in the book as a whole were not... nurtured - aside from the sisterhood between our main characters. So much of the past and outside is told to you, but there's a rift in the present, when action takes place. Tell, why would I buy that Enzo and Adelina had any chemistry? Why would I care that Teren has his reasons when he doesn't spark any curiosity? They didn't measure to what each of their roles could've been.

Raffaele was the only character that fascinated me: perhaps because of his gift and relationship status with the main character, or maybe because of his usually "calm" demeanour. He reminded me of Julius in Red Queen, he's the wise pillar of the story. I'm afraid he won't be that important from now on with that ending introducing us a new character, so I'm sad to see him go.

As for the technical aspects, the storytelling was well executed and not confusing, although I still find Lu's writing a bit emotionless/cold. Like the word says, it's mostly that: technical, dressed with a few philosophical quotes here and there, and some mantras/sentences to add lore and ambience. Maybe if I was younger, I'd enjoy them more.

Meh, it's a solid three stars. Would probably be 2.5 if goodreads allowed half stars.

This book was perfect for me! The author is amazing! The book was fast paced, great plot, and i felt she did great explaining everything. I've read other books that sometimes i felt over complicate the characters and enjoyed how she explained the powers.
I feel a little bit of mixed feeling toward the main character, I hope that in the next book her character
becomes more confident now that she knows where her powers came from on how to control them.
The romance part felt a little bit weird, almost forced. I'm pretty glad there wasn't much romance.
I'm really excited for this series and i look forward to reading the next book,

It's actually a pretty good book. I though that it was nice and refreshing that it wasn't set in a dystopian era. The setting in the book kinda reminded me of Italy for some reason.
I also really liked the main character Adelina Amouteru because she's an unusual type of hero. More like an anti hero. There where several times in the book where I was eager to follow her train of thoughts and emotions, but at the same time, I feared what might will happen if she followed her train of thoughts.
I gave it four stars, because I felt like, Legend, the other book trilogy by Marie Lu, sat the bar pretty high for miss Lu's future books, and I feel like this book is missing a little big of action that you see in the Legend trilogy.
But all in all I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
