We heard this in a staged reading at OSF. I was interested in it because the ending is unlike endings of the 3 other of his plays I've read. I'm not sure that I love this play, but there are some great characters.
I liked this play very much, but there were a few awkward moments and contrived conversations. The ending was excellent and unexpected.
Lyngstrand: I think that marriage must be considered rather like a kind of miracle. The way a woman gradually comes to be more and more like her husband.
Bolette: Shares his interests, you mean?
L: Exactly!
B: Ah, but what about his abilities? And his talent? And skills? ...And the things a man acquires by reading and study—perhaps you think they too somehow pass over to his wife?
L: Yes, that too. Little by little. By a kind of miracle. Though I know this only happens in a marriage built on love and faith and genuine happiness.
B: Has it never occurred to you that a man might also be drawn closer to his wife somehow? Grow more like her, I mean.
L: A man? No, I never thought that.
B: But if the one, why not the other? —Act IV, pg 58
As in "A Doll's House," I enjoy the way Ibsen tackles feminist themes of women's will and freedom.

Også ekteskapets psykologiske aspekter kommer tydeligere frem her enn i hans tidligere verker.

I really enjoyed this one, and would love to see a production of it some day! Great characters, some interesting intrigue and also tackles and interesting question about. Would reread this one for sure.

The ending felt like a bit of a cheat but it was a decent story nonetheless. The teacher / former student relationship was a bit uncomfortable for someone of modern sensibilities though.
Nokon sentrale element her verkar litt... usannsynleg eventyraktige.
