Metrical forms and rhythm are like complex algebra to me: I just can’t wrap my head around them. Trying to discern iambic pentameter makes my head hurt. I'm missing part of my brain. I was hoping this book would help. It didn't.

Really interesting (if not a bit repetitive at times). Anyone versed in poetry (ZING!) knows what lines do, but reading this book-length essay has gotten me to rethink what I know at a time when I really need to. I want to go through all of my poems now and rework the lines, just to play around.

very informative, though I would revise the writer’s definition of poetry & say that it is the sound of language organized into patterns. the tradition of poetry started without lines (ex: homer, orally recited poems from before the alohabet existed) and continues today (ex: slam poetry, spoken word). oral poetry doesn’t have lines, but it sure does have patterns (that may or may not include meter, rhyme, repetition, etc)!

This was not made to be a starting point for casual or beginner poetry readers. Very technical and microscopic in its focus. If you already love poetry and are bored with the basics of analysis and critique, this is a great next step for your journey.

Short guide, not for the casual poetry reader as it gets very very technical on a lot of tangents in its analyses.

Very intriguing and educational. As a poet, I learned a lot that I want to implement, however it is not a page turner. I put it down for way too long at a time. Though it is great, it is dense. And for this time of my life I just couldn’t complete it as quickly. None the less, great book.
