A excellent primer for discussing gender from the Western perspective, though the authors do a nice job discussing how our very views of gender are incredibly Western focused. I’d recommend for anyone hoping to explore their own gender and/or engage in meaningful discussions on it.

obviously, this is an introductory text and as someone who has delved deeper into other books looking at gender, this covers a lot of what i already know and understand. nonetheless, i think this is very valuable! considering its breadth, it surprisngly goes into a decent amount of depth within each chapter and subsection, even more impressive given its short length.

the illustrations werent my favourite, however i appreciate that as an introductory text it provides some break between long passages that may be otherwise monotonous. it also helps to better explain some of the concepts and models discussed and overall makes the topics covered quite easy to understand. i also enjoyed the way the the book prompted the reader to think about our own biases and understandings rather than relying on the narrative provided by the author.

despite all of its many positives, there was something about this that failed to hold my interest; maybe it was the illustration, the tone of the text/writing itself, or something entirely different that i cant pinpoint.

Excellent overview of the many facets of gender: history, definitions, intersectionality, and so much more that I needed to learn.

A decent primer that introduced basic concepts without digging in too deeply. It did a pretty good job at what it set out to do. Barker did a better job with intersectionality in this book than in Queer.

Possibly even better than the queer history novel? I loved this so much, and it made me think about all the ways we perform gender in our everyday lives. Fascinating.
