 Imagine an Ocean’s 11, Steampunk team that lived in Holland during the 1890’s Bohemian period.

That is the best visual guide I can give you on the setting of Six of Crows.
~~~
Kaz (the leader of the pack), is given a lucrative but dangerous heist.
If he can pull it off, he will be a very rich man, but he knows that he can not pull it off alone.
Along with Inej, Jesper, Nina, Wylan & Matthias, we are pulled along for a journey of betrayal, truths, lies, deception, and sleight of hand.
Six of crows was the first book that was ever recommended to me on Booktok.
I started reading it in May 2021 but gave up on it at 60%. I just couldn’t get into it. I just didn’t understand the hype. Why was this book getting 5-star reviews? I just couldn’t see it. Was it me? Maybe I’m simply too old (being in my 40’s) for this young adult novel?
Or maybe it was because it was multiple narrations? Each chapter from a different character, learning about their past and their present? Maybe that was it.
Fast forward to now.
This book was still getting recommended to me on Booktok. So I thought I would give it another go, this time as an audiobook. Maybe having different voices for each of the characters would help (it did).
I got to the end of the book, and I was like: "What? Is that it?:
I knew going into this book that it’s a duology. However, I’m not sure if I want to read the next book. Do I invest my time? Do I want to know how it ends? This I’m unsure of.
I really wanted to love this book. But alas, this one is just okay, hence two stars.
Will my mind change if I watched the Netflix series “Shadow & Bone”, which is based on Six of Crows? Who knows, I’ll add it to my Netflix queue and get back to you.
Epic fantasy heist novel with the most incredible cast of charaters that hold their stance all over the alignment chart. There's fun, there's banter and there is beautiful and dramatic inner monologues and snappy one-liners. You get to dive into most of the characters' inner lives and it's incredible how well they are seperated from each other, and how each character can have a different perception of each of the others in their group. Each dynamic is unique and is reflected in their views of each other.
