This one was a slow read for me. I was having the hardest time connecting with the first part of the book. After I got to that one hundred page mark I started to worry I wasn't going to connect with the book at all. It did come eventually! My moment of interest was when they officially boarded the boat for the heist. The multiple POV took away my interest at the beginning of the book. They were incredible during the heist, but I personally feel like the beginning could have been okay with just Kaz walking us through everything since he was the one getting the offer. My disappointment with this book really came from the lack of connection I felt, when it came to the Shadow and Bone trilogy I was hooked from page one, so I was saddened that I didn't feel the same connection with this one. Especially to how well-regarded this book was. I am hoping that because of the ending and how it picked up in this book that Crooked Kingdom will be redemption for this duology and keep my interest from beginning to end.

There was no part of him that was not broken, that had not healed wrong, and there was no part of him that was not stronger for having been broken.

I read this as part of Book Roast's Book in a Jar book club. I've been wanting to read this series (can you call 2 books a series?) for awhile now, and this was the motivation to finally get it in front of me.

It took me quite some time to truly get into this story. The audiobook version didn't work at all. AT ALL. Not until maybe the midway point was I able to stop backing up my audio reading with the ebook version, an exercise in frustration I can't even explain. I realize that this is a spin-off of sorts to Bardugo's earlier Grisha series, which I didn't read. But there is literally zero world building here. You are thrown in the deep end and left to figure your way out. And this world is incredibly thick.

All of the figuring out I had to do didn't really make me want to read the original series, not gonna lie. And that's a shame, because the story of the Grishas and the war and all of this other stuff I partway understand sounds AMAZING.

Anyway, getting back to this story. This merry band of misfits was a lot of fun to read about once I got my footing. This is an ensemble cast story, and while Kaz Brekker is the core of the group, he is by far the least interesting, to me. I found him kind of a dud. His back story is heart breaking, certainly, but so is everyone else's. These people would've fit in perfectly on the island in Lost.

Jesper and Inej were my favorites. Jesper because I love a smart ass side kick, and Inej because I love a strong character that can kill a man with her little finger. Inej's back story completely wrecked me.

It took forever to get to the meat of this story, the attempted jail break of this massive Azkaban ice castle where the Swedish nazis lock up the pseudo Jews. Our heroes leave Amsterdam, with a Swede, a South African, a Romani, a Russian, a little prince and whatever Kaz is. German?

The breaking out was by far the best part, and to be fair, it is the main part of this story. My frustration with that part was there was no plan. This was not a "Well, that didn't work, time for plan Q." It was more like, "Wait, that worked? We survived? Yeah...yeah, that was my plan all along. I am so clever and dastardly."

Seriously, they trip over themselves and fall into a solution more than they actually succeed with their ideas.

The ending was pretty incredible, before the trip to the lucky island. I am concerned about Nina. I love what a strong, bad ass character Nina is. I suspected that situation would happen in some form we found out what kind of Grisha she is (how bad ass is her job? Seriously, I love that), and it was done so well, and felt so real.

I don't even want to get into the romantic aspects of this book, anyone who knows me knows how I feel about utterly and completely useless and time wasting romances. Want me to be supportive of a useless romance, give me playful banter and flirting, like Jesper and Wylan. I can get behind that. (Don't fuck it up in the next book, please).

Mathias wants to kill Nina. Gee, how did I ever figure out they were going to be a thing? The Kaz/Inej portion was so stupid up until the very end. If they'd just had this tension without any, "Why am I suddenly feeling all these feels" throughout, I would've been 97% supportive when the "big reveal" at the end happened. Now I'm just

It may seem like I'm trashing the hell out of this book. But honestly, I loved it. I got really into it, despite the eye rolling and occasional ridiculousness. I am genuinely looking forward to reading the second book, which I will very soon, because I'm pretty sure if I leave it too long, it will be another Throne of Glass situation where I can't keep up with the world and I'll lose some of the love.
