I’ve enjoyed a lot of Lisa Jewell’s books, and while I enjoyed it, it was probably my least favourite. 

In East Yorkshire, single mum Alice discovers a strange man on the beach outside her home. He has no memory of who he is or how he got there. In Surrey, almost 200 miles away, newly married Lily discovers her husband is missing. Both women find themselves surrounded by 20 years of secrets and lies. 

I really wasn’t a fan of the characters and I think that had a large impact on my overall opinion of the book. Alice was honestly a bad mother, and a bloody idiot for letting this random man into her home, with her children. Lily, while her personality and behaviour was much more forgivable than Alice’s, was rather annoying and immature, especially when it came to her husband. 

The storyline was okay, nothing spectacular but not terrible, and overall, I did enjoy it.

The mystery of the book was okay, and I did find myself flipping the pages wanting to find out what occurred and how the different storylines connected. But, most of the characters were incredibly annoying to me, doing and thinking things that made no sense at all given what was happening in the story. Also, lots of the dialogue was so incredibly awkward/stilted, to the point of being cringeworthy at many points throughout the book, that I kept being taken out of the story by it.

All in all a really interesting concept. I had a good time reading it, and I think the twist was pretty well done.

Might be harsher on this book that others she’s had written because I enjoyed them so much. I enjoyed this one! The twists were almost expected but I was also truly surprised at times. She does a great job with the interiority of the people involved. Worth a listen!
