Mankell's portrait of Wallender is warts and all in this crime story that not only has a dark theme but also touches upon some uncomfortable issues. Wallender is shown as fallible and very very human and there are times when you even feel embarrassed for his actions and the situations he finds himself in.

I don't know whether it was the translation or whether Mankell writes so perfunctorily but the writing style really jarred with me. Also the solution to the murder was most unsatisfactory. I have looked forward to reading the Wallander series as it is so well loved, so am left quite baffled.

I enjoyed this book, the first in the Kurt Wallander series, but I wasn't blown away by it. Wallander is called to a brutal murder scene of an elderly farmer and his wife. The wife is barely alive and she manages to say one word: "foreign ". When this becomes public, Wallander has to manage the news reporters and xenophobia within Sweden. Sadly a Sudanese refugee is killed. So now Wallander has two crimes to solve.
