Not a great finale. While the previous two books were almost good, this didn't even live up to that weak standard.

Everything was so obviously done; there wasn't one genuine surprise or twist in the plot. Not only that, but the characters are (still) wholly unlikable and flat. In fact, Faraday went from being one of my favorites in book #1 to being one of my least favorites. Suck it up, girl!

Also, does anyone else find the romance pairings in this series to be slightly creepy?

I enjoyed re-reading this series so, SO much, and I'm sad that it has to come to an end! I'd forgotten how easy it was to be consumed by this world. It's so unique and complex! Sara Douglass has truly created a world like no other, and perhaps that's why this series stuck with me after 10 long years. I know it will stick with me for years to come, as well!

Holy crap, there's so much death in this book! I know it leads to rebirth...but STILL. It was really hard to watch all of the characters I love suffer so much in the final battle.

Furthermore, how had I forgotten so much of this book? I think I only read this one once before, where I'd read the original trilogy at least twice and the other 2 leading up to this one twice as well, since I re-read them before this book came out. But seriously, how did I not remember this stuff?!
SpoilerI remembered that Faraday didn't die in the end - thankfully - but I had forgotten about Katie representing the land, and about the souls of the trees being in Ur's terracotta pot. And that the demons had to face Drago's 'witches' one on one, and that there were 5 because they represented the Sentinels. I can't believe I forgot all that!
It was kind of nice, though, because it was almost like reading the book for the first time again! And I loved it just as much as the first time.

Like I said in my review of Crusader, I ship Zenith and StarDrifter pretty hard. (And I also said that by this late in the series you get used to the creepy SunSoar affection for their own blood) It was really difficult to watch them fall apart.
SpoilerEven worse, to watch her gravitate back toward WolfStar. I hate that fucker with the fire of a thousand suns!! (SO glad he finally died. SO GLAD.) And after everything he did, I hated that she still cared for him. Why, Zenith?! WHY?!?! Then to watch her get torn apart by Hawkchilds right in front of StarDrifter, and for him to not make it to the Field of Flowers...it kind of breaks my heart :(
Their relationship was so heartbreaking and tragic, it kills me!

SpoilerSo, STARDRIFTER?! I definitely forgot that he disappeared in the end. Which makes me really sad. He was one of my favorite characters besides Faraday and FreeFall, and that he can't share in the haven of the Garden is extremely depressing!!!

I also didn't realize how open the ending was! WHAT HAPPENED TO FARADAY & DRAGO'S STORY?! Why is there no spin-off for them? I've read the DarkGlass Mountain trilogy, and while it's tied in, I'm 99% sure Faraday and Drago are not in it. *huffs*

This was pretty horrible. I hate how the magic was literally the easy way out for most conflicts. No logical thought applied to most of the magically fixes. And what was with Stardrifter at the end? Seemed pointless.

Crusader is the sixth book in The Wayfarer Redemption series by Sara Douglass. When this book was released back in in mid 1990’s, when I first read it, it was originally called Battleaxe and was book one of the Axis Trilogy- the series later got expanded and so the name change. Part of my 2019 reading challenge was to read an Australian author- well how do I narrow that down, there are so many great Aussie authors, but Ms. Douglass was one of the first Aussie authors whose work I fell in love with. I have devoured everything she had ever written and was devastated when she lost her battle with cancer back in 2011. Her books really stuck with me over time, and I don’t revisit them as often as I’d like. The last few months have been emotionally draining for me, and I really wanted/needed to lose myself in another world- so I chose to revisit some old favourites that have a comforting nostalgia associated with them. I couldn’t choose just one of her books, they are all great, and quite a few of them are interconnected- so I chose to read them all.
I still love The Wayfarer Redemption series as much as I did the first time I read it. It is an epic fantasy interwoven with prophecy, demons, evil Baddies, adventure, action, drama, a bit of a love triangle, good vs evil, magic, mystery, and so much more. Ms. Douglass weaves her stories quite masterfully, crafting a truly believable and sumptuous world in which to set her story. Her attention to detail brings her world and stories to life- with its own culture, history, language, religion, folklore, magic, laws, tensions, and communities. So cleverly done that I feel like I have ‘been’ there before.
The Wayfarer Redemption series books are:
-The Wayfarer Redemption (Book One)
-Enchanter (Book Two)
-Starman (Book Three)
-Sinner (Book Four)
-Pilgrim (Book Five)
-Crusader (Book #6)
If you like epic fantasy, adventures in new worlds, plenty of action, good vs evil, some violence, wonderful character, and interesting stories- then this book series is definitely one you will want to read!

Happy Reading!

By the last book in this trilogy, I was enjoying it just as much as I enjoyed the original trilogy.

This author just can't handle battle scenes or the death of her main characters. I liked the 5th book all right, but this one was a dissappointing ending.
