I really wish there was a .5 star option because this wasn't quite a 4. However, since I read this in only a few days despite being buried in the crush of tax season I'll round up.

It was an satisfying novel that explores the adult friendships between five friends who grew up in a small Wisconsin town. There were some flaws but overall I enjoyed the complexity of the characters as well as Butler's writing style.

Four friends, Leland, Henry, Ronny, and Kip, grow up in Little Wing, WI, and this story follows them as they become adults, get married, have families, and live their lives. Divorces, fights, joys, sorrows.
Lee is a famous musician, Henry a farmer and part-time painter, Ronny a drunk, Kip owner of the town mill event space. Lee is in love with Beth, Henry’s wife, and longs for her all of his life. It causes a rift between Lee and Henry.
I enjoyed this story about these friends and their heartaches and how their friendship changed in this small town.

That was one hell of an audiobook. Each character was narrated beautifully by a different voice and the end result is amazing. Superbly done. Shotgun Lovesongs is a story about a group of friends in a small town in Wisconsin. Though their lives have all changed drastically throughout the years, one became a famous musician, two got married, one suffered brain damage, and one became fabulously wealthy their lives still all intercept. And the raw emotion and feeling that they all have is stunning. A must listen or read. Hard to put down. Gritty, real, and heartfelt this novel has something to offer for everyone!

3.5 stars. This book made me fall in love with the setting. I now want to go into this part of America and explore Wisconsin and it's surrounding areas. I loved Butler's style of writing and the characters were great but the actual storyline didn't fully engage me. I wanted to love it all but it took me a while to get into it.

Tries to be a story that’s less about plot and more about putting the reader in a place and time, but it ends up feeling like a book where not a lot happens. A few nice moments along the way but overall somewhat forgettable. 2.5/5

Honestly not great. Like the concept, and the changing perspectives, but at the end of the day too much of the prose was forced and overly explanatory, and the whole thing fell kind of flat because of it.

The writing was adequate, but it was not for me. I felt no connection to the characters, and the plot did not intrigue me, so I gave up about 50 pages in. It supposedly takes place right near where I grew up, but the characters' lives bear no resemblance to my own. That's probably because I was a city kid, and they lived in the country somewhere not too far from that city.
