A member of our book club aptly described how he finished this book "hate reading" it. Sure there were poignant moments, beautiful moments, but piled on top and in between was too much useless writing. Where was Auster's editor? Why does treating well-known and well-respected authors mean not doing the necessary cutting of palaver? Too much. Too long. Too indulgent.

I’m a huge fan of Paul Auster. This is the story of Archibald Ferguson or the 4 stories of Archibald Ferguson. The 4 stories all start from the same origin when Archibald’s grandfather arrives in Ellis island. His grandfather gets married to an immigrant and together they have 3 boys. His grandfather gets murdered while working at a warehouse in Chicago. The mother raises the 3 boys. The youngest boy is Stanley. Stanley meets Rose and falls in love with her. They get married and years later Archie is born. From this point we diverge into four directions, four different lives.
At first I didn't want to read 4 stories of the same main character, I thought this will really be long and I’ll get bored, I mean why couldn’t this be just one interesting timeline? but then as I read more, I started appreciating every story and also started looking forward to reading them. Paul Auster’s narration was flawless, his story telling ability is superb and his writing is so intimate, you’ll feel very close to these characters. Paul Auster has this ability to capture the moment so precisely. There is a lot of this book that comes straight from his own life/experiences just like his other books. I really enjoyed listening to these 38 hours, the longest book I have ever listened to.

Це історія дорослішання єврейського хлопчика Арчі в Америці. Найбільше роман фокусується на 1950-60-х роках.
Зазирнувши на сторінку зі змістом, стає зрозумілою структура роману. Глобально він поділений на 7 послідовних розділів, але кожен з них має по 4 підрозділи, як-то 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4. Також маємо 1.0 - це вступна глава, в якій розповідаєься історія родини головного героя - як його дід приїхав з Мінська в Америку, як зустрілися його батьки.
А далі починається цікаве. По суті, кожен з підрозділів в рамках однієї з семи основних частин оповідає про один і той самий період життя головного героя, але показує нам альтернативні варіанти розвитку. І тут навіть впливають не вибори, які робить сам Арчі, а якісь зовнішні обставини, які несуть його за течією.
Я трохи побоювалася, що читати по 4 рази про одне й те саме буде нудно, але це виявилося не так. Хоч в кожній з "гілок" ми і зустрічаємо схожі теми - родина, спорт, школа, університет - та щоразу автор фокусується на різних аспектах, тому переважно читати було цікаво.
Тут дуже класна мова (яку відчутно навіть всупереч перекладу), а особливо мені сподобалися перші розділи, де автор показує життя очима досить малої дитини, і зроблено це дуже майстерно.
Протягом роману автор дуже детально розповідає не лише про життя нашого героя, а і відбудовує навколо нього епоху, і робить це супер-деталізовано (іноді можливо навіть занадто). Ми знаємо про фільми, які показували в Нью-Йоркських кінотеатрах, що в ті роки вважалося вартим уваги в літературі, яку музику слухали, які важливі суспільні події відбувалися (величезна увага приділена расовому активізму).
Але направду під кінець я вже трохи втомилася, та була сповнена рішучості дочитати книгу, і цьому дуже допомагав клуб і графік читання, якого ми переважно дотримувалися - тому щовихідних обговорювали чергові 4 варіанти якоїсь зі сторінок життя Арчі Фергюсона. До речі, моя рекомендація, якщо почнете читати книгу - робіть невеличкі нотатки до кожного з розділів з основними подіями, іменами, тощо. Бо вже коли ти відкриваєш розділ 2.1, який продовжує події, які відбувалися 100 сторінок тому, стає трохи важкувато без такої шпаргалки.
До речі, починаючи цей роман, я очікувала побачити повну історію життя зі зрілістю і старістю, але ні, ми бачимо лише детальну історію (точніше 4, точніше як....) дорослішання, і на останніх сторінках нам розкривається сама механіка того, як так взагалі сталося, що ми читаємо про одну людину, що живе 4 різні життя.
В цілому я залишилася задоволеною романом. Я вже писала вище, що головний герой не надто впливав на своє життя сам, а ніби плив за течією - так і я ніби плила в надувному бублику потоком - іноді він був стрімким, іноді майже сповільнювався, але врешті решт ми допливли. Я б не сказала, що тут якийсь карколомний сюжет, мене радше привабила атмосфера та можливість підглянути, що коїться в голові у 10-15-20-річного підлітка.

In some respects, what a tour de force! Archie Ferguson's history divides into four versions of Ferguson - the different possible routes of a life and a character, with other characters equally taking different routes too. The chapters take each version in turn and the conceit of the different Fergusons takes a while to get the hang of and as time goes on it's difficult to keep track of the details of each Ferguson's life.
But there's loads - far too much - detail overall especially about historical events, which bogs the book down at times. Sometimes the detail is just a series of lists, of actors, films, books and so on. And the characters in each version live largely privileged lives which made me feel the book missed a trick. Plus the writing is dense, with sentences often rambling on for close to the length of a page.
The book finishes by coming full circle but by then it'd become a bit of a slog. Such an interesting idea and reading this at a time when US student protests are being compared with 1968 protests, it felt quite prescient. But I couldn't quite forgive its massive length and excessive detail.

4321 is a book about all the different Fergusons. It dies into four different timelines of Archie Ferguson, and how his life could’ve played out in four different ways. Auster seemingly invites you into small choices make the difference. Based on the praise and very idea of the book. I walked into the novel, highly excited to ponder a larger question and enjoy the whimsy of life. Well, the initial introduction, and first chapters of each of the different Fergusons had me engrossed and enjoying the lyrical and informative approach Auster taken. Exhausted by the middle of the book and I was really trudging through the book, So I found myself disappointed with Ferguson. Based on the earlier chapters and the connection that Ferguson initially had two world events, I expected to see much more of the different decades, Ferguson place in them. The larger themes that I expected the author to cover never seem to come up. And so-called twist at the end really hound in on the fact those aspects are missing. I found myself breathing a relief to know the book is over and disenchanted with the author. Maybe in the future, I would try another book by this author however this book didn’t hit for me.

A really interesting premise and I enjoyed this challenging book overall. However, I did get lost from time to time, forgetting details of each life as we moved from one to another. I wish I had made some notes to keep everything straight from chapter to chapter. I also think it was too long. I wish I were a skimmer, because there were large sections that are definitely skim-worthy.
