Fine. Just not super Princess Bridey.
Very straightforward. Lukewarm characterizations. Beautiful cover.
Maybe good for a middle school audience where the plot and tropes are still new.
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for the Advanced Reader Copy.

Maybe it's my mood, I don't know... but this wasn't my cup of tea. I love the girl power, she can kick butt and take names, but the character growth is minimal and the cliff hangar ending doesn't leave me wanting more.
I love the idea of a princess riding out to save the boy she loves. But this book didn't hold my attention. I skipped to the end, which was an avalanche of revelations to set up the sequel. This book just wasn't for me.
2 stars
It was okay. I have definitely read worse. But the characters are bland, the politics seemed forced, and the pacing is off for what should have been a fast paced read.

DNF- Definitely picked this up because it was a Princess Bride retelling, but I found that I got a bit bored halfway through. Put it down and never ended up picking it back up again.
THIS BOOK. I CAN'T EVEN THINK IN COMPLETE SENTENCES RIGHT NOW. I THINK MY BRAIN IS STUCK IN CAPS LOCK.
Alright so just about everybody on the planet knows that "hero/heroine's sacrifice"is my all-time favorite trope. THAT IS BASICALLY THE ENTIRETY OF THIS GLORIOUS BOOK.
And the angst!!!!!!!!! I love the sass, and the sweet, and the political intrigue, and the character development- HELLO. And can we talk about that twist at the end? Both of them I mean, the one I figured out and the one that blindsided me? I can't believe there's not release date for the sequel yet. Oh, you mean this just released a week ago? NOT SOON ENOUGH- excuse me while I go cry.
(moved to the top of my list, btw). This is easily in my top 3 2020 releases, and I'd say my top 3 for 2020 reads also, out of the 89 I've finished so far this year.
Please enjoy the follow gifs that are great representations for my feelings/reactions to this book:
