- geje !

The plot and story were much richer than that of Graceling , but I personally strongly disliked the love interest in this one, I found him quite immature. The book would've been much better without the romance, and it would've been nice to see a story of friendship rather than that of love. It all worked out in the end though, so that was nice

This series was incredible and this tied it all together so well. It finalised a lot of unanswered questions and left you stunned.
Absolutely loved it!

WHAT. THIS WAS SO GOOD.

Bitterblue was interesting, Saf was frustrating but in a very Peter Pan (fun) way, Teddy was darling, Po was Po (!!!! YAY PO), and Katsa was able to cameo, which is fabulous.

This book was darker than the other two in my opinion. It’s dealing with the aftermath of the torture of the people in Monsea by Leck. The people are understandably not fine. The book portrays different ways in which the people in Monsea deal (don’t deal) with the trauma and how Lecks reign affects the kingdom even many years later.

I really wanted to hug Bitterblue several times while reading the book.

Bitterblue is struggling. The people around her act in weird ways she doesn’t understand. She feels like she doesn’t know what’s going on in her kingdom. So she starts sneaking out to find answers and meets new friends. But instead of clear anders she just finds more riddles and puzzle pieces that won’t fit together. This book  had more mystery and less action than the previous ones.

2021 re-read:

Still an all time favourite. My opinion has not changed: this is still the best book of the original trilogy. Not enough people appreciate how intricately woven the story is, and how delicately it handles the atrocities of mind rape and its subsequent PTSD for a whole KINGDOM. The way this story depicts the different ways of people dealing with PTSD is just so heartbreakingly realistic, and it is still so filled with HOPE and EMPATHY. How do I find the words to praise how well Bitterblue is written? From her insecurities and vulnerabilities to sheer force of will and desire to shoulder the burdens of her kingdom--it's just so beautiful and touching to read.

Reading this was like trying to piece together a complicated puzzle. The end result left me feeling an array of emotions: a sense of triumph and pride, a crippling depression because of how dark the true history is, and a chestful of hope for recovery and better things to come for all these characters I love.

Sidebar/random notes:
- Kristin Cashore writes all the tropes I love to read, especially romance tropes. Queen in disguise falling in love with a commoner? Love it.
- Giddon's growth from Graceling to who he is now is A+, and I love seeing the building blocks of trust & friendship between him and Bitterblue. The potential for romance down the road is there and I'm here for it.
- Loss of agency a recurring theme through the whole series.
- People with power (in both the political sense and actual powers like mind-control graces) need empathy to hold/use such power responsibly.

2012 review:

10/10

Nothing I say here can justify how flawless and perfect this book was, and how much of an emotional impact it had on me. I literally cannot put what I'm feeling into words right now. It's like I've been waiting my entire life for this moment, for this one book that had everything I've always wanted to read about. My heart was crushed into a million pieces, and put back together again. I cannot get over how perfect the three books in this series were woven together in the end. It was literally like watching puzzle pieces put together.
SpoilerI had to keep down a sob during Bitterblue and Fire's exchange about Saf's dream-giving Grace.
The desolation of the kingdom...everything weighing on Bitterblue's heart...I carried them too.

The layers and layers of detail this book had...the heart and soul that Kristin Cashore put into it...oh my god. I'm absolutely floored. Every page, every sentence, every word! I...I don't even know how to describe my experience reading them.

I just want to lie down on my bed and cry. I shed these tears for you, Cashore. Someday I will try to express my thanks more eloquently. Hopefully in person. Thank you for this wonderful series.

Seriously the most under-rated YA series there is! THESE BOOKS ARE INCREDIBLE! I almost cried at the end, and I want to tell you about it but I can't because it will spoil it!

The second book in this series was easily my favourite, as I enjoyed the adventures and magic, and this third concluding book just brought back all of my excitement. I loved how this book is different in that it is more of a mystery and we learn of Queen Bitterblue mending and rebuilding her kingdom, whereas the other books featured more fighting and wars and survival. Same characters, different stories. LOVE IT.

I wish there were more!

Officially giving up on this book. I loved the first two but I just couldn't get into this one. DNF.
