A mixed up story of the interconnectedness of family in the good times and the bad. I rooted for Luke, Tom and Savannah. Life doesn't always turn out how you ever expected, and this story had moments of bigger than life, and points when feel deep sadness for the characters. R.I.P Pat Conroy.
This is undoubtedly one of the best books I have ever read. Conroy makes his characters so beautifully human. Yes, they're terribly damaged, but the love and the bond between the siblings, and the complexity of the relationship between the siblings and their parents is brilliantly drawn. I can't think of any book that's come close. I laughed and I cried over and over. I even cried twice over the beauty and glory of the game of American football - a game that I strongly dislike. Terrible things happen in this book, including what is perhaps the most traumatic event that I've ever read about, but there are so many beautiful things to offset that that I'm very glad that I didn't let my fear of that one scene keep me from reading this. This is a crazy and beautiful book and I loved it tremendously.
Also, Frank Muller's narration was absolutely perfect.

Beautiful prose — but a little rambly and winding. I felt like I was alternately reading a collection of memoir drafts and a 90’s TV show script, both of which were VERY good but not consistently compelling to bring me to page 700. Still, this book has one of the most terrifying scenes I’ve ever read and stirred a lot of compassionate for the main character and his tragic family.
This isn't my usual genre however this was recommended by a friend. I enjoyed the read! The book made me cry once or twice.
