Pretty heavy read. Really captures the not just the mental illness of the boy's mother, but also how it affects him and the rest of the family. Totally unsurprised by the ending.

The art style of this book is incredible. The way color is used to convey tone, mood, emotion is breathtaking.

I liked how the story was told through vignettes, it felt like the reader was getting a glimpse into the author's childhood through bits and pieces. This fragmentation of memory really encapsulates the trauma the author, his mother, and their family experienced. An episodic and unstable timeline also mirrors his mother's experience of psychosis and mental illness.

As someone who is mad, this book was also incredibly heavy to read. It reminded me why I hate the biomedical model of mental illness so much and how violent and dehumanizing "mental healthcare" often is. I kept wishing I could hear the mother's perspective, but I know that's not what this particular book was about.
