This was... Something
I kept thinking about how I disliked so many things about this book, but the writing style was so nice I couldn't put it down.
Finding a book on butch femme dynamic is hard enough, but finding one where the dynamic is the focus is even harder. Idk if I would say this one is a good representation. If anything... Sometimes it felt like this book was borderline fetishistic. The way Sasha talks about her butch boyfriend and other butches around made me uncomfortable at time. As a femme myself, who interacts with a lot of butches, and is dating one, I found it weird how Sasha talked about them.
It felt... Dismissive and very stereotypical. It didn't seem like she saw masculinity at times, it felt like she just saw men.
I actually didn't dislike Sasha herself, I felt a lot of pity for her. She is one of the most broken characters I've read in a while. And judging by how she is probably a self insert from the author... I hope she considers therapy.
Other characters were just there. Their personalities were... Well, they were I guess.
Some scenes were wonderful. Some were grotesque (the Instagram live). But overall it was a very entertaining read, even if I didn't agree with Sasha.
I think my favorite character was Jules, she seemed like the most reasonable and pleasant out of the bunch.

i regret every minute i spent with this book but if nothing else at least everyone will stop recommending it to me now. the worst part is that the author is clearly very smart (and will not let you forget it) and is a technically skilled writer, so i did manage to finish it despite rolling my eyes after every page. genuinely, this should’ve been an essay collection. i would’ve read and probably enjoyed the author’s analysis of femme identity if she had just owned it. a novel was not an effective medium for what she was trying to do. also can someone please save her partner???

Like many others, I couldn't stand this book or the characters but kept reading out of curiosity. I said WTF out loud several times like the multiple times she fed her dog her eye boogers??Everything just felt so hard and complicated. Relationships and sex should be fun and happy, not hard and playing games. They need to sober up too, don't take shrooms while you are drunk and fighting. I guess this book made my elder queer self (46 so ancient according to this book - and yes we still have sex) feel tired and happy to not be in my 20s.
another netgalley. man, i really wanted to like this one, but it turns out the relationship drama i hate in straight books does not suddenly become bearable in queer books
nitpicks: sasha calling her pussy "kittycat," the relentless referencing of other media, always done in the exact same way like explaining to a child. maybe i'm not the target audience because i had already read/watch/was deeply familiar with pretty much everything that was referenced, so the explanations only felt redundant to me, but then the fact that i knew all the references suggests that i AM the target audience (20-something genderfuck lesbian), so who knows
good things: it was sexy at times
in fairness to the book, i might just be tired of city queer stories and novels where the protagonist is getting some humanities phd at an unnamed but implied ivy. lou was the only bearable character, 10/10 boygirlfriend goals
1.5 rounded up to 2
eta: 5/28/24, my 2 star review has been haunting me. i'm reducing to one

"This book would kill a straight person" is so accurate lol—and many queers, too, judging by the dismal Goodreads rating. If you like femme4butch lesbian messiness, this is the book for you. It was hilarious, nailing the faux-intellectualism-that-actually-is-intellectual, multi-layered bimbo aesthetic to a tee. Don't come in expecting to like the characters (even the dog's POV is rife with
