It was a little confusing at first. The nice I figured out what was going on I found the characters charming and funny.

If this book were a person, it would be that sweet but lowkey nutty aunt pulling up to your bridal shower with a freshly baked batch of cookies and advice on how to become a widow at 23.

This is literally the most unserious thing ever. I have so much respect for India Holton for just not giving two fucks. Jammed her foot right up that gas pedal and went full throttle to loony. Like if The Princess Bride, The Pirates of the Caribbean, and Howl’s Moving Castle somehow contributed their gene pool to make one weird in vitro baby—this would be said baby.

Imagine a pirate coalition founded by a bunch of supercilious matrons with an equal taste for crime and decorum. But instead of battleships they run flying manors and townhouses outfitted with canons. Now add a bottle of arsenic and really well-written, humor and you have a perfect palate cleanser.

Because sometimes the only thing that can scare away the demons from hounding your last remaining brain cell is an unholy explosion of pastel and ribbons.

That said, I think it goes without mentioning that you need to be utterly done with life or the clanging around in your noggin’ to read this. Or else the overly generous usage of “piratic” and all its denominations might just do you in.

Oh also the romance is cute!

A whimsical adventure, with a nice romance subplot. I adored the elder Darlington and the world that was created. I do think this would be better as a movie, especially with all the moving parts - there seemed to be little introspection or emotion, just a whirlwind of jokes and quirky magic.
