Kirsty Logan liegt die Poesie im Knochenmark. Die Autorin kann gar nichts Schlechtes zu Papier bringen. So auch bewiesen mit dieser Kurzgeschichtensammlung. Obwohl mein Herz keine Geschichte so tief berührt hat wie die erste fand ich alles, was folgte dennoch lesenswert und äußerst interessant. Ich mag wie sich durch wiederkehrende Themen (z.B. Schwangerschaft bzw. Mutter-Kind-Beziehung, Liebe, das Meer) und die Rahmenhandlung eine ganz besondere melancholische Atmosphäre aufbaut. Ich habe die Wellen rauschen gehört und die Möwen kreischen. Es war düster und stürmisch, aber warm unter meiner Decke an meinem kleinen Rückzugsort. Jede Geschichte hat mir etwas Neues gegeben, das ich noch nicht kannte und das mich zum Nachdenken gebracht hat. Die Autorin scheut keine stilistischen Experimente, egal ob es sich um die Nutzung von Weißraum oder eine Geschichte in Form eines Skripts handelt. Mein einziges Manko ist das zu stille Ausklingen der Rahmenhandlung. Ich hätte mir gewünscht, dass diese noch in ihrer eigenen Geschichte gipfelt.

Cutting Teeth
Eine Jägerin, ein Wolf, ein Ehemann – einer ist zu viel. Unglaublich stimmungsvoll, melancholisch und schaurig.

The Mother of Giants
Die Mütter eines Dorfes müssen im Angesicht des Winters und des Hungers schwere Entscheidungen treffen. Obwohl ich die Auflösung irgendwann geahnt habe, war es trotzdem erschreckend und mutig.

Stars, Witch, Bear
Ein Ehepaar sucht sein vermisstes Kind bis die Mutter im Wald eine Spur findet. All die schönen Elemente wie Märchen und Bären mit einer sehr traurigen Note.

Small World
Eine Ehekrise und eine Erklärung über das Leben und Leiden von Wechselbälgern. Ausschließlich in Dialogen erzählt. Dreht sich in viele Richtungen, was es sehr spannend macht.

I wasn't sure if I should pick up this collection (I struggled quite a bit with The Gracekeepers) but I'm very glad I did. I was in the mood for a whimsical collection and this is exactly what I got.
My favourite stories were Cutting Teeth, The Keep, Stars, Witch, Bear and Small World. Honourable mentions to The Exact Sound of Grief and The Mother of Giants.

Kirsty Logan hasn't let me down yet with her writing, albeit this is only the second book of hers i've read but I just know she will never let me down.

I definitely expected this to be a 5 star read but in the end, a few of the stories were a little more far fetched and confusing and in the narrative of the story it didn't make sense to be telling them to an unborn child. I think had this just been a collection of short stories, fairytales in a way, that weren't connected by the two women this would have been the full 5 stars as I'd have been judging each story as it's own rather than them all working together for the main story of Liska, Ruth and the unborn child

Lyrical, haunting and beautiful.

It's not often that you come across a short story collection where all of the stories are a pleasure to read but this book is a rare gem. You feel for all of Logan's characters; she has a real flair for creating distinct lives amidst fantastical scenarios all embellished with a poetic fairy-tale narrative.

A wonderful and exquisite read.
