This book made me feel seen in very different ways. One, as the title implies, from the outside; she incisively calls out so many of the shitty beliefs and uniquely white cultural things that are the built into growing up white in this country. But also reflecting a lot of my own experiences and anxieties, putting into words how weird and hard it can be to navigate parts of America that feel foreign.
It's also very, very funny at times, and the kind of funny that makes the poignant bit three pages later hit that much harder.
