I loved Capo Crucet's perspective about growing up Cuban-American in Miami and then the contrast of living somewhere that no one looked like her when she moved away for the first time. I loved reading about the lasting imprint Disney has on kids who grow up in Florida. I loved her story about the weddings held in her apartment building. Altogether a great collection.

I need to stop picking up memoirs/biographies and expecting the the ratio of social critique: anecdote to be different. Still a worthwhile listen, I am just setting books up to fail

A look at the spaces outside of the communities we're born into, Crucet has complied a collection of that speak to experiences of trying to make sense of the world that has systematically placed straight and white at its center. This should be required reading.

As a Latina, first-gen college student and child of immigrants from Miami, this was so reflective of my own college experience in the Midwest. Would be a great gift for a minority going away for college.

Lovely hysterical, witty and cutting essays that share the authors life experiences. I thought the sections knit together beautifully and took on challenges really well. Also laid bare a lot of inequities through her experiences. I also loved the essays in particular about her time in Nebraska and also about her father and therapy.

One of the wittiest, most real book I’ve listened to about the first generation American experience going to college! I cried laughing! 10/10 would recommend
