Fever Of The Bone by Val McDermid

More a thriller than a mystery, since the reader knows who and why from the very start. The book was good and gripping, but I had a hard time with the ending. I assume it is a cliffhanger, but still.....

Actually I would give this book 3,5 because Th first half in my opinion deserves 3 stars but the second half is much better and it is 4 star material . For me the book was quite good as a whole. At the beginning the plot was unfolding a little too slowly, the fact that the crimes and investigation start at the beginning doesn't help much because I really wanted the pace of action to be fast but it turn out to be of medium speed. When we pass to the second half of the book the pace becomes faster and book is getting more absorbing. The plot was quite interesting. The fact that it is 6th book in the series and I haven't read the previous ones makes this novel the one I meet the characters. They are very interesting people with complicated histories which shaped them. Every character is unique and they are so different that the reader can easily distinguish them, not as in some books where background characters are so similar that they are hard to identify. The huge plus of the book is that it is written in the way that when you read it and there is something mentioned that had happened in previous novels there is a quick reminder what it was about so the reader can understand the connection it has to the events which are happening now, but it's not so long that it's boring. At first when I was reading I wasn't pleased with the book but as I was getting further and further I find it more likable.

A new boss causes problems for Tony & Carol & Tony finds himself persona non grata & banished to a different police force, however, their separate cases involving the murders of several young people gradually dovetail into the same case. The teenagers are disappearing after being befriended by a mysterious perp online & their mutilated bodies found shortly afterwards. Tony is convinced there isn't a sexual component to the murders so why the mutilation? Meanwhile, following his father's death, Tony finds himself drawn to his home & gradually learns more about Edmund Arthur Blythe.

This was a return to form after the ho-hum of the previous book: pacier with a tightly written plot. There's less gore in this one too as the murders happen 'off page' but there are still a couple of grisly descriptions of the aftermath. The conclusion also hints that there may be some movement in Tony & Carol's personal relationship at last.

Excellent read, lots unexpected twist, already aware of Dr Tony Hill, from wire in blood

Hmmm, having read this one out of order is going to make it hard to go back and read the earlier books in the series. There were a number of big occurrences in the lives of the characters here.

But this was a good, very gritty serial killer book, and the characters were fascinating. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Wow! Return of Jacko Vance (my favorite perp of the series) but a bit disappointed in the ending.

My rating of this book has nothing to do with the quality of the book and everything to do with the fact that I hate Val McDermid right now for causing so much pain to characters I've come to care about. I hate her for killing animals, and I hate her for taking away the hope right when Tony and Carol finally had a chance. It's not okay.
