Audition is the second book by Ryu Murakami that I have read. Having started with Piercing, Audition was a bit slower paced. However, once it gets into the horror, it is so visceral and well described that it feels like a hot iron down your throat.

I've seen some complaints about the ending, but personally I believe it fits so well with the characters and is a really good example of the characterization that Murakami uses.

I really think the ending shows Aoyama finally being broken from his delusional point of view. The spell has truly broken and he sees in her what everyone else has seen the entire time.

Audition took me about two hours to finish.

I'm really torn on how I feel about this book. Yes. The movie adaption is better and I will 100% say that. But, I expected more from this book. It was well written and well planned out but just fell flat for me. The graphic dog killing scene too really turned me off. I know it's weird to say when I actually wanted the main character to die after having to read through the sex scene but. It was so.. ugh

You ever read a book and you’re not quite sure why you liked it as much as you did?
Objectively, this is a pretty average book but it’s a fun and quick read. I’ve been in quite a reading slump recently, and this definitely got me out of it. There was just something about this book that was so unserious and I found it to be ridiculous and funny at times lol.
This book is riddled with misogyny and very much written by a man. Personally, I didn’t feel a lot of the tension or the build up. I think this is a book that would be a lot better going in blind. I don’t think I enjoyed the book in the way that I was supposed to…..but I actually did end up liking it in an odd way and idk the book was kinda camp lol 3.5 stars.

It's... Okay! I was hoping for more to be honest. The slow burn at the start made me feel like I was in for a thriller or something more psychological. But the ending was just a gorefest, and the motive for the antagonist is kind of... Meh? The violence comes out of nowhere and it feels shovelled in. The ending was way way too short and too fast - when I realised how little I had left, I assumed the victim was going to die and that would be that. Might've been slightly better if they had 🙃
