I enjoyed the book and specifically Penelope’s letters to the Odysseus.
A must read if you enjoy greek gods/ goddesses and stupid choices they make only because they are horny or jealous that does not impact them but mortals.

What a stunning work!
The way this book crafts the shape of the Trojan War, its causes and its effects, via a mosaic of vignettes of the lives, trials, and tragedies of the female characters is so masterful! On top of that, events aren’t presented chronologically, so we know this isn’t about about the Iliad specifically, but rather the way women are both subjected to untold suffering in mythology while also being pushed aside. The arc that Cassandra endures is especially devastating.
What an outstanding read. Would highly recommend!

Rating: 2.7
I feel a little bad for my low rating, as I do think this book is good in what it sets out to do, but their felt like there was absolutely no passion, it was hard for me to feel anything with this work.
This is shown from the perspective of the women involved in the odyessy and the Illiad. It was interesting to see a work that explored that. I do see a lot of works doing such a huge POV, There were many women represented here.
Maybe this would have done more for me if I didn't already know a lot of greek mythos. This book just fell short of entertainment value, of a lot of substance. Maybe if Haynes had focused on a couple of women versus of the majority she had.
I do want to say I loved Penelope's chapters. I think it would be cool to see this author write from Penelope's POV as she felt the strongest out of all these women(as her character felt the most real.)

as someone deeply familiar with the source material, perhaps my expectations were too high. however, i think that this book’s desire to be a comprehensive retelling makes much of the content feel clunky and forced. then, despite being a self-proclaimed feminist retelling, the emotional core of this anthology is almost always driven by the abhorrent actions of men rather than the heroic actions of its all-female cast. and so, aside from calliope’s brilliant and agonisingly short interludes and a vividly drawn cassandra, i’ve found myself a bit disappointed.
