I found myself really feeling for a lot of these characters in such a deep way. really love take on a classic

Haynes has marvelously integrated mythology's greatest war with the problems of modern-day wars. This book focuses on the forgotten and devastating impacts of war on women, children, and families. Many of the classics, such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, praise the bravery and brutality of men in war but fail to account for tragedies inflicted upon society as a result. I love how Haynes frames the story from the perspective of one of the Muses singing to a mortal man (potentially Homer?), urging him to recount the reality of the lives of women in wartime, which are equally as important as the warriors. Personally, the themes of this book are not limited to some faraway land and time. We have a lot to learn and acknowledge from Haynes' beautiful storytelling. -Hanna G.
