Jhumpa Lahiri’s collection of short stories, Interpreter of Maladies, is the sort of book that demands to be savored. Each story is a perfect snapshot of life in India or for Indian Americans. The characters are well-developed, and I felt that I could have read a full-length novel about each of them but there was something especially poignant about only spending such a short time experiencing their stories.
Lahiri’s writing is beautiful, with an elegant restraint that makes the words fall away and leaves the reader totally immersed in the story. While it’s not the kind of writing that makes you want to highlight half the book, that is because most of the time you’re too emotionally invested in what’s happening to notice.
My favorite stories were “When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine” and “The Third and Final Continent,” with an honorable mention to the title story, “Interpreter of Maladies.”
I can’t wait to read more by Jhumpa Lahiri. Interpreter of Maladies was the well deserved winner of the Pulitzer Prize and I’m sure I will be reading some of these stories for years to come. As an immigrant myself, they resonated at my core.

Beautifully articulated short stories that are an easy and gripping read. A book you can reread every year and learn something new each time.
I think I enjoy books that talk about people who live very different lives than I do because it reminds me that we are all human and that we all have a lot of the same emotions. This book made me feel really lonely because in every story, there was a character who just wanted to be loved, noticed, or appreciated. The stories that ended with the loneliness unresolved almost broke my heart because I wanted them to be happy again.
Anyway, Interpreter of Maladies is a very elegantly written, powerful little collection of short stories that remind you want it's like to be alone. I loved the last story in the collection. I thought it made for a perfect ending.

My new favourite short story writer. Brilliant, evocative tales focused on the Indian immigrant experience. Each story was totally entrancing. A small masterpiece - no wonder it won the Pulitzer.
