the way i read this book so fast i finished it in one sitting 😭
literally got me back into mystery novels omg, I didn't expect the ending and I was hooked the entire time, moved straight onto book number two because I am in love with this series and the characters already.
The Naturals was a solid intro to the series. Not mind-blowing, but definitely fun. The concept of teens with crazy-good natural abilities being recruited by the FBI to solve murders? Yeah, sign me up mhmm mhmm. And while some parts were pretty predictable (like I knew where we were headed with that twist), the ride still had a few genuinely creepy moments that made me go, “wait a damn minute??”
Cassie was a refreshing lead—thankfully not another YA heroine who becomes a prodigy overnight. She’s talented, sure, but she messes up, questions herself, and actually reacts like a real person would in the middle of a murder investigation. We love to see it. Her emotional struggle didn’t feel forced either; it gave her character some weight, and I appreciated that.
Now the side characters? That’s where I’m really invested. Dean, Michael, Lia, Sloane—they’ve all got something brewing under the surface, and I need the rest of the series to dive deeper into their backstories. Right now, we’ve only been given crumbs. I want the full tragic buffet. And I liked that the story didn’t shy away from showing how heavy this kind of work would actually be on a teenager.
And yes… the love triangle. Look. I was quite indifferent to it—BUT I picked my fighter early and it’s Dean, no question. The quiet, broody, emotionally-scarred ones? tho not my type, dean stood out to me and thats reason enough. That slow burn tension with Cassie? I’m rooting for it with my entire chest. Michael, though? I’ll give it to him—he’s got charm, and I love a guy who can make me laugh. He may not be my pick romantically, but he’s absolutely coming home with me for comic relief and general hot-boy banter. Had me giggling and blushing like oukkaayy i see you.
All in all, it’s a quick, fast-paced read with murder, sass, teenage angst, and just enough FBI drama to keep things spicy. Didn’t totally blow me away, but I’m definitely in for the long haul—mostly to see where these characters go and if Dean and Cassie finally kiss like the world depends on it.
