Ended pretty abruptly, but the excerpt from the second book at the end was more exciting than the entire first book, so we'll see.

DNF, I just couldn't get into the writing/plot. Maybe I will give it another go in a couple months time, but I doubt it.

3.5 stars
I remembered reading this back in 2014 or something and remembered feeling that this book was sort of revolutionary. It might not be the first book on this trope, but certainly the first book that captured my attention and roped me into dark romance.
Caleb had a dark past, being raped and tortured in his birth country, Pakistan. He was saved by Rafiq and was given a decent life. But Rafiq had his own need for vengeance against this Russian guy because Rafiq's family suffered at the Russian's hands. Caleb naturally wanted to repay his debts and was loyal to Rafiq. So loyal that he had spent his life building a career as a slave trainer, even though he said that it was a market he dearly despised. The slaves were usually with some form of consent. All this because the Russian was known to dabble in it.
With Livvie, Rafiq said that getting a non-consenting slave from a first-world country like the US would definitely capture the Russian's attention and get Caleb into his inner circle so he could be destroyed. So Caleb kidnapped Livvie and got her to Mexico.
But before that, Caleb stalked Livvie for some time and had met each other when a man tried to get Livvie inside his shady car. Livvie had asked Caleb to pretend they knew each other to get the other man away. Livvie had always tried hard in order to avoid being seen as a 'whore' so she didn't have many sexual experiences, she was still a virgin. So when she bumped into Caleb, she thought he was so beautiful that he had become the object of her desires. Imagine her surprise when she realized that Caleb kidnapped her.
In Mexico, Caleb trained her to be a good slave while he slowly started to care for her. At one point, he was so horny that he took Livvie in the ass. He started to lower his guard and Livvie managed to escape him. But she fell into another evil group's hands that asked her for ransom for safe passage back to the States. While she was with them, she was almost raped and beaten up badly before Caleb came and rescued her. Caleb finally told her of his plans for her and the book ended with Rafiq texting Caleb that he was flying in as he was starting to doubt Caleb's loyalty.
The book had its flaws, Caleb was angry that the other group was being rough with her and Livvie was sort of shocked about it when Caleb himself had planned to sell her to be essentially raped too. So, like, hypocrisy much? Livvie's infatuation with him was definitely Stockholm but she still had some sense in her. I don't know, the writing was okay, but there was this dream-like glossiness feel to it because details of the development of their feelings towards each other were sort of glossed over, and just bam, oh look, feelings.
This book was so nostalgic for me.

Oh my
Oh my. This book tore me into pieces but kept me coming back for me. I am sucked into the DARK romance and this is right in the heart of it. Bam! Now, I must get the next one!
Thank you CJ!
