Captive in the Dark

This was an amazing book, written by an amazing author. I just finished rereading it in preparation for the sequel coming out on Saturday! I felt just as emotionally involved the second time I read it - not an easy thing to accomplish!

This book is not for everyone, but is absolutely perfect for someone who likes to read something that taps into raw human emotions - both those of the characters and the reader. I have no idea how she did it, but CJ Roberts makes you feel all of the confusion, angst, and passion of the characters in the book.

Both of the main characters are so well developed that you feel like you are really there suffering through each day with them, and somehow loving every minute of it! These were characters who stuck with me long after I finished reading the book, so I am so grateful that I get more time with them in the sequel!

Okay...What the fuck did I just read?
I don't know if I should be traumatized or turned on...because I'm not really sure...

The story follows two characters, and it's interesting because it is both first-person POV and third-person POV. From the FMC's perspective, it's first and it's third person from the MMC. Caleb was abducted when he was a kid and forced into a life of sex trafficking and slavery. The lines blur, and he finds himself on the opposite end of that spectrum, where he takes on the role of training new slaves. He ends up kidnaping Olivia, an American virgin, to use her appeal in a revenge plot.

I like the fact that POV switches between the characters. It almost dehumanises Caleb by the fact that you're separated from him and his internal thoughts. He's not a person you should imagine yourself as because you're not in his mind. And then when you're in Livvie's mind, you are in her head and have a front-row seat to her dealing with the trauma of the situation and the struggles she faces. You also see a lot of crying and crying and crying and crying and crying and crying because she spends a lot of time crying!!!

This is a highly disturbing and dark book but that is more due to the fact of the surrounding subject matter, of kidnapping, torture, sex trafficking and slavery. The smut is not that heavy. Our character is a virgin at the start of the book and she still has her hymen at the end of the book. But some sort of penetrative sex does occur (think of other places his peen can go)... There are aspects of BDSM and the theme of submissive slave and dominating master do contribute a lot to the spicy scenes.

This is NOT A LOVE STORY, this is a story about a girl who has severe Stockholm Syndrome and finds solace in her captive. Caleb is not a good guy. He has hardly any redemption qualities. He is a murderer. He is a kidnapper. He is an abuser. And he gets hard when he sees girls cry.

BUT I did enjoy it. My morals fly out the window when I read a book so I was pretty captivated by this Captive/Captor book. This was perverse, dark and has about 7000 trigger warnings and I would just say if you don't want something that messes with you psychologically, don't read this book.

But if you want to see a character-driven psychological dark romance where you're questioning why these characters are even together or why there are feelings between these two, this is a great book for you. So just go into this with a pinch of salt and not a discussion on world commentary.

The tropes in this are:
▶ Dual POV (First and Third Person)
▶ Captive/Captor Romance
▶ Age Gap
▶ Morally Grey MMC
▶ Virgin FMC
▶ BDSM/Submissive Slave and Master

I knew it was going to be dark but yeah.... it was dark. Raw emotional manipulation and conditioning.

The way my heart painfully clenched multiple times...

Fell for Caleb just a little bit 🤏

Will be reading part 2.

Not my proudest read but we gotta remember it's a fiction book written by a woman (yes it makes a huge difference)

I can relate to this so much. It really touched me. It was emotional and I felt the pain.

OH MY GOD! I don't what to say ! But I loved this book so much. But I tell you this isn't romance. Caleb and Olivia well, there are few sweet moments between them and everything was so so intense..oh god...I shouldn't like ...shouldn't...but Hell man! I loved every thing. It teared me down...I had to once close the book not because I didn't like....It was because I overwhelmed . Just couldn't digest and with the cliffhanger like that I am now off to the second book!!

In one sentence this was both sexy & disturbing.

If you had asked me if Caleb was the perfect book boyfriend in the first chapters of the book I would have given you a look that would make physical violence look and feel less painful.
But as I kept on reading about Caleb, his character developed and my oh my... let's just say that Caleb can keep me captive for as long as he wants, anywhere he likes and however he wants. :)
