„Rzecz dzieje się w Polsce, to znaczy nigdzie”.

Absurdalna historia w świetnym tłumaczeniu Tadeusza Boya-Żeleńskiego.

I have no idea what that was...

I can see how it might be seen as clever and linking to absurd art movements at the time but it is not an enjoyable read... MEH

Excellent intro and middle sections, very weak ending. Exceptionally funny for a play and great for its critique both of theater cliches (saying "I'm dying" as you die) as well as the entire feudal hierarchy. Well worth the read, because it's a quick one. Could have used a much higher-impact/ridiculous ending, instead of the soft, open-ended one we got.

Yay, ich benutze einfach ganz viel Vulgärsprache und schon bin ich innovativ und fortschrittlich!

I made the mistake earlier of trying to read this too closely. The illustrations in this edition were beautifully bizarre, and something might be said of Ubu Roi being the first deep fried meme, or more relevant than ever considering our political climate. But it’s also super dumb. Maybe worth a skim.

A game changing template for literature and art. It still strongly reads like a template. At least the English translation does. The original French play doesn't make much sense to me (I blame my grasp on the French language). Important read nevertheless. If you are a music nerd, you will somewhat understand the basis of the 70s art-punk/experimental music band "Pere Ubu". And you can look at Dadaist sculptures and art pieces and silently chuckle, but better.

Though I'm sure he's done a lot for my craft. I cannot stand this play. My legend of a theatre studies tutor who I shall refer to as Spiby-man set my class the task of reading this play after having shown us an abysmal adaptation on DVD. Out of respect for the Spiby-man I persevered but it nearly cost me my sanity.

Probably my favorite play I’ve read for my theatre history class this semester.
