3.5. At first I thought I didn't like it, but it grew on me. The chapters from Lovisa's point of view were much better than those of Bitterblue and Giddon, who I found pretty one-dimensional

Audiobook - simple characters & story, felt very YA, enjoyed some parts but not as magical or captivating as others in the series

Wow! I really enjoyed this return to the Graceling Realm! I always loved Bitterblue and seeing her growth as Queen was delightful. The return of beloved characters was well balanced with new characters. The expansion of the world is also fantastic, with new lands that fit well with the rest of the world but have their own unique twists. Overall I really love this book!

The exploration of a young person realizing the extents and impacts of their parents' abuse was very well-done, without the abuse being unnecessarily graphic. I also thoroughly enjoyed the comic relief from the telepathic animals, especially the fox. It was much needed in an otherwise heavy book, and I feel like it really made the story shine.
