A 3.5 if we’re being honest. Maybe I need to re read this one because I’ve heard great things about this book but I couldn’t get into it. The side characters were great but what was the plot? I mostly liked the writing style

Overall a very confusing book with not much of a plot. Not so much about a girl learning to love New York, as it is a girl growing up in a restaurant.

This book is boring, irritating, and so fucking offensive. Calling Tess "unforgettable" is a bit of a stretch... Unless you can't get over the fact that she is about 10,000 steps backward for feminism.

And can I just call bullshit on the either pretty or smart, but not both attitude this book has?! Umm.. fuck you very much. Women can make it in this life while being pretty and smart and driven and any other attribute besides just based on the assumption that men want to fuck you.

This was a hard book to get into as the characters were rough and the plot really was just following a women through her experience of learning how to work in restaurant business, drugs and sex. She has a lot of growing up to do along with others. Though the relationship between her and one of the other waitresses is interesting and intriguing.

This was on my "to read" list for quite some time and once I heard about the TV series, I decided to give it a shot.

I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, I thought the focus on an elite restaurant and its employees was an interesting angle and I liked reading about the juicy, behind-the-scenes details. I also enjoyed the descriptions of wine and the process of Tess learning about how to become a decent server. On the other hand, I found Tess to be immature and her partying/blacking out phase got a little stale.

The characters were generally interesting, but some of the character development was lacking. I wanted more from the relationships between Tess and Simone, as well as Tess and Jake. I never got the appeal of Jake, he just seemed like a quiet, unkempt man who used Tess.

The writing style was a little much for me at times, and the desired effect was lost on me. I have yet to watch the TV series, but throughout the book, I kept thinking about how it would likely be a good show. A so-so read, didn't love it or hate it.
