Creepy right from the start, lots of body horror and claustrophobia. Almost too much going on though. The constant explanation of sounds was distracting. The animal scenes were...... I wish I had checked the content warnings.

As with The Troop, the descriptions of unspeakable horror were spot on. The monsters had just that hint of Pennywise the Clown that made them just disturbing enough to hate spotting my cat peaking around my door at night.

Dang. I was hoping Nick Cutter would be a go-to horror author for me after reading and loving The Troop. But after reading this - I know it will be hit or miss.

There were a lot of plot points that I think were unnecessary. They did not tie into the story well throughout and weren’t wrapped up well enough by the end. Like the ‘Gets? The name is annoying in and of itself - but it’s written as a major plot point on the back of the book when really it serves a singular plot point, and has nothing to do with the large majority of the book.

I found myself quite uninterested halfway through and probably could have DNF’d but still I kept on…

It can definitely be said that Nick Cutter knows how to write very disturbing imagery, however! That was certainly on point. It had me wondering - is this what TikTokers mean when they describe a book as a fever dream?

Like a lot of horror/thrillers this book suffers from hitting the peak amount of tenseness a person can feel really early on and then maintaining it instead of giving the reader relief then building tension again.  By the end I was skimming.  Bad guy is bad because of mental illness. Wish it had been a short story.  Would be a good premise for a video game.

I didn’t get into this one as much as I did with The Troop. I think if you like old school horror sci-fi, you’ll enjoy this book. The flashback storyline with the son creeped me out way more than the current storyline. Overall it was a page turner.

This book was well written and incredibly detailed. You definitely felt like you were in a dark damp fever dream the entire time. The book is very graphic so if your stomach turns Easily this one is not for you. I was bummed that we didn’t really get to learn about the ‘gets more than we did. For me, over all this story didn’t do it for me but it was a great mix of horror and psychological thriller.

So many reasons I DNFed but primarily:
  1. Absolutely no buildup of suspense. The protagonist goes mad in the first 30 seconds and the thought of 388 pages of his addle-brained whining made me want to hurl my kindle into the sea
  2. The only woman in the story is a plot device and nothing more. Cutter completely deletes her from the narrative until it suits him to remind us that she exists. Remarkable that Cutter can lose track of one of FOUR characters on an undersea base in the Mariana fucking Trench.
  3. Literally do not give a rat’s ass about 80% of the flashbacks, which make up about half of the entire book. So unnecessary.

I really enjoyed this book, even though I have some issues with the plot. Many things that are brought up such as
the fig men
and the 'gets aren't really carried much throughout the story and I feel like I would forget about those parts until they were thrown back in.

That being said, I still very much liked this book. The amount of background given on the main character alone made it worth the read, and I do love how so much of the things casually mentioned about his childhood are circled back to and become bigger, more important things.
