The description of gore and body horror got to be too much for me, especially in audiobook format.

Absolutely disgusting. The body horror was very inventive and interesting - but the book relied a little bit too much on gratuitous violence, fatphobia, and abuse narratives to add shock value. Also - could have done with more of the story focusing on the 'Gets. We just kinda forget about it (no pun intended) after the first 50 pages.

As soon as they introduced the dog, I remembered the book's author and immediately looked up whether the dog died. It does die, and dogs being harmed/killed is just something I can't go past. I know myself too well

Slow start and I didn’t love the ending but the 100-150 pages in the middle were 10/10.

There's two, maybe three good story's hiding in this. I'll tell you right now a spoiler, the Get's the big bad disease you read about in the blurbs, has NOTHING to do with the story. It's useless and could be excised, but that's the first good, wasted story idea. If this had been a character driven tale about the Gets, boy would I have given it five stars. The second good story is the Ambrosia, but it devolves into a mishmash of horror tropes. Together, it fails to land.
