much as I have enjoyed Van Wey's other work, I really struggled to get into this one. With so many characters to follow in different timelines, the information jumbled in my brain.

This is my first time reading something from the author, and I must say that I am impressed. There was tons of great body horror, and it is an area the author clearly excels in. Very Lovecraftian, and the creativity featured many moments that were gross and unnerving. It does dip into the cosmic horror subgenre here and there, and you'll also get a touch of sci-fi. I loved the ocean horror in here, as a side note!
The 90s theme worked well, and the crime components never got awkward or cringey. It all fit together nicely. I predicted the majority of how it ended, which was a little disappointing but I didn't mind the conclusion either. Is it the scariest book you'll read? No, but I've found body/cosmic horror to rarely do that for me, and learned to enjoy the journey instead.
Despite the things I enjoyed, it did fall a little flat but I can't put my finger (at least yet) on what the cause of this was. I'm thinking it may have to do with the pacing, but the flaws overall were on the minor side. I'm definitely intrugied to check out more books from the author down the line!
