Probably a 2.5. I don't think I 100% vibe with this style of horror. But this book is almost 500 pages and it suffers from pacing issues and problems maintaining dread and tension. Immaculate setting and atmosphere, though.

I've only read a few Coates books, but each one seems invested in making sure no real harm ever comes to the main characters. This lack of stakes also seems to lead to a lack of character development or growth. It's an odd choice for a horror novel, and it doesn't work for me. I do see why other people would find this appealing, but I wanted more.

This was quite slow at times but in the end I did have a good time. I am disappointed though as I went into this thinking it was going to be a 5 star read.

This really reminded me of Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes if you’d like another book like this one.

disappointing...

started off strong but quickly tapered off since quite literally nothing was going on. there was such a big build up in the. current and past tls on what was to happen and overall both felt very lacklustre.

imo a past tl was unnecessary or at least this descriptive considering how much diving we ended up reading in the current tl and it was easy to guess what was starting to happen to the passengers.

nothing really happened till 68% and for the life of me i couldn't be bothered to care abt the past stuff but i was intrigued in the current tl esp since now they had formed a relationship amongst each other but again, the build up didn't match up the outcome.

always amuses me in thrillers esp deep water thrillers how these people keep on going like if i was visiting a shipwreck in the bottom of the ocean and id seen how the passengers wrote warnings for what had happened etc...yea i would've been out of there immediately idgaf abt the money.

Almost DNF’d this several times because the protagonist is so profoundly stupid. Finally finished it as a “hate read” and did enjoy it as such.
