I Kissed a Girl by Jennet Alexander

A sapphic novel sadly written for the male gaze. Already ridden with exposition, immediate and child-like sexual tension like that of 14 year olds, immature tone and delivery. I probably would have loved this as a curious 14 year old, but alas this is not a romance novel I care to continue as an adult who would like some literary skill and a better author’s voice.

characters didn’t seem to have chemistry, Noa judges Lilah for being in beauty pageants which is just an odd thing to judge someone on—sure, they’re not practical, but who tf cares? The plot was boring, didn’t feel like it was really going anywhere due to the fact there seemed to be no chemistry between them. Then there was the overused “I can’t tell if they like me or not so I won’t say anything” trope. MY issue with the book is that the description of Noa didn’t match the cover?? Odd…

Nice light read! I liked where the book was trying to go. I was rooting for Noa and Lilah, but I was feeling rather frustrated at certain points with their misunderstandings with each other. And while I didn’t expect who turned out to be the stalker, there was a few bits that popped up to me that was a bit predictable. Overall a humorous book that was enjoyable.

The chapters were too repetitive on them being on set all the time, chapters were long and drawn out. The attraction between characters wasn't being sold.  Was hard to keep attention and not be fully interested in the book.

Thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for making this book available to me via #Netgalley

I have been reading a lot of Lesbian romances in the past few weeks and this one was just beautiful. Filled with laughter and slasher horror scenes. Honestly, it is so funny even when the humour is just dark.

We follow Noa who is a special effects makeup artist. Instead of attending college as a medical student just like her parents wanted she decided to forge her own part in the horror genre makeup scene. This is when she finally meets Lilah Silver. Lilah is an actress who has long been trying to climb out of her B-list status. She no longer wants to just be the hot chick in the horror movie. She wants to be in a movie that the stabbing scenes don't live her drowning in stage blood. Oh, she is trying really hard. When Noa meets Lilah she is saying all the wrong things [because that is what you do in front of a very hot chick - Noa has no game]. The long hours on set keep bring them together and every encounter seems to drive them apart from each other until on faithful Kiss. A kiss that hints that the other girl might be more interested in the other!

I really enjoyed this book. There is something about forced proximity stories that you know will drive you to the edge of your seat. Combine that with celebrity status and you know that you have some high stakes relationship on your hands!

Good characters, strong plot, could have used more polishing.

So overall, I liked a lot of elements. The characters were well developed, I grew to like and understand them, and they made sense. The conflicts keeping the main characters apart romantically felt realistic and not frustrating or annoying. The plot was well paced, satisfying, and played with tension very well. I also really liked diving into the world of film and film makeup and felt it was interestingly represented.

My issues were more with the quality of writing unfortunately. A lot of the dialogue felt very unnatural, more like people communicating over chat or message than talking in person. The writing overall felt just a little juvenile.

Overall, I'm glad I read it, I liked the characters and story, just could have used a bit more polishing.
