This is the most fascinating book I’ve read in a decade - maybe longer. Everyone should read this book to gain some perspective on their place in the universe.
A Short History of Nearly Everything answers two questions: (1) What do we know? and (2) How do we know it? Aptly titled, this book covers everything from the creation of the universe to the diversity and evolution of life to weather and plate tectonics. Along the way, we get a good dose of colorful science history.
This book made me laugh; it made me quote paragraphs to my husband; it made me appreciate the miracle that we are here at all; it made me feel very large and very small; it made me excited about science again; it made me feel closer to God.

Excellent book. It was what every children's science book aspires to- make science interesting, engaging, and easy to understand. You get an excellent overview of many topics (discovery of the solar system, atoms, evolution and more!).

This was a fascinating read. As someone with no particular background in science, but very interested in it, this was very accessible and an easy read. Some parts of Bill Bryson's writing I sometimes don't like, especially his long sections in the book going on about the different dramas between scientists. A lot of that felt a bit useless and, to me, not very funny. I think this my problem with Bill Bryson's writing though. I read his book "The Body" on human anatomy a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it and subsequently read one of his celebrated travel logs on Britain, "notes on a small island" and hated it. I think his greatest value as a writer is his ability to accessibly explain complex topics and histories. However, personally I don't jive with some of his humour and ramblings and more so come to his books for the content.
