This is a terrific book. I have read it before, but it's so packed full of stuff that it was no surprise to find that I noticed lots of different things. Bryson is not infallible here--he has the information on lead wrong, for instance--but that doesn't mean it's all wrong: he gives Rosalind Franklin her due for her work on the double helix, for example, which many many texts don't. This is a great book to give you an overview of what's out there in science and to spur your reading onward!

A nice snippet of everything science has brought us as a riveting storyteller would tell, with all the peculiar and humerus bits. A fun overview to read.

Fascinating. Bill Bryson does a great job of explaining things that makes them digestible. I wish there was an updated version for everything we’ve learned in the last 20 years.

I am generally a Bryson fan. It may be that I was just not in the mood for this one or not interested. Bryson provides a primer on multiple sciences of the universe. It is written in easily understood manner and generally interesting. Additionally it has his trademark humor but I am not finishing it. He covers everything from the atom thru earth's construction to evolution of man.
Bryson absolutely succeeded at what he set out to accomplish with this book. This book provides a history of the development of humanity’s understanding of “nearly everything”.
This is purely personal preference, but I would have preferred a more straightforward history documenting our current understanding of nearly everything. This approach would also assist in cutting down the length of this book which would undoubtedly make it more accessible.
Bryson definitely deserves praise for making these topics feel approachable. Overall, this is a solid book.
