Consistent fun from Scalzi.

3.5 stars. I picked this novel up as soon as I finished Lock In. As often as possible I start with book one of any series I can, but will say that Head On works as a stand alone as well. I enjoyed the world that John Scalzi created with the Hadens, technology and political/economic friction. Much like Lock In this is equal parts sci-fi and police/crime procedural, which for novice sci-fi readers like myself, makes for a nice balance. I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the first book in the series, but really enjoyed it nonetheless and would certainly pick up book three if there becomes one.

This novels both include the scif-fi, crime/police aspect, but also an underbelly of white collar economic crimes as well as political insights. The mashup of the different genres is what is most appealing for me.

This was a good follow-up to the world already established in Lock In. I listened to both books, choosing Wil Wheaton as narrator for the first and Amber Benson as narrator for the second. It was truly remarkable how quickly I was able to adapt to the notion of Chris Shane as a female character instead of male. I find myself wondering if I'd read both books myself what gender I would've mentally assigned to the character. Scalzi has subtly left this open to interpretation in an artful way, without making it the thrust of the story even in the slightest.

I couldn't wait for this book to come out-- I am a Scalzi fan in general, and greatly enjoyed the previous book in this series, Lock In. Scalzi continues to use the science fiction setting to explore themes of how society treats the disabled, as well as gender presentation and norms. Though personally I am not a fan of the athletic league setting for this mystery, it was a joy to see Chris and Leslie back in action, as well as the supporting characters like Chris' parents. A solid sequel that I would recommend to fans of the first!

Thanks to NetGalley for my ARC. All opinions are my own.

Solid second book in a series. It's still a crime procedural, which isn't my favorite, but with Scalzi's humor and flare I still enjoyed it.

John Scalzi's Head On is a wonderful (and mayhem-filled) sequel to Lock In that's hard to put down. If you enjoyed Lock In, then you'll very much enjoy Head On.

I get that Scalzi's M.O. is telling stories mostly through dialog. I expect that going in. But some better means of distinguishing characters would be greatly appreciated, especially in a mystery.

I love this world, great concept that feels authentic and is followed all the way through.

Excellent detective story with a science fiction setting. The tone is light, with a wry sense of humour running through it. The characters are well defined and likeable, and the plot rattles along at a great pace.
I really like Scalzi's writing style, and read this because I liked Redshirts so much. This was more serious, but his writing style totally suits my reading requirements, so I will look for more of his books. I am definitely becoming a fan.
